I finally got a chance to dip into 106 over the weekend and really enjoyed the bits I had time to read. I thought '30 years of the C64' covered each aspect of the machine really well considering the constraints on space, and I really enjoyed the 'Making of Uridium', with the 'other games by Braybrook' boxout being a nice touch. '20 Nintendo Games', 'Import Only', 'Minority Report', and 'Unconverted' all had great game choices, so those went down well too, and the 'Classic Game Room' feature was very insightful.

The impressive thing is, though, how many great looking features I've still got left to read. :D

Yes I think it's a great issue again. Since ish 100 they've all been good, waiting for the issue I can censored about!

I really liked the 64 emphasis this month and Andrew's article was ace. I would agree on most of his game choices. Also great to see Jaz's interview, can't believe it took 106 issues to reel him in!

Not read the Grandstand article yet, will wait for some quiet time when can read it properly. The rest of the issue I also found really good. I never really liked Uridium TBPH so not read that yet, except the box outs.

Keep up the good work

PS re: covers - I really don't care what you put on them. True, issues 105 and 106 looked quite similar but that really doesn't matter; would like to see a Frey cover soon but not fussed really what you choose.

Uridiums Manta craft is very much like the Ford Capri of it's time.
Nippy, highly maneuverable and efficient.

I've been really enjoying this issue.

I was surprised to read that there was an Amiga version of Uridium that wasn't released. Has Frank Gasking (or would it be Adrian Simpson for the Amiga), looked into this and requested the files?

The Amiga PD feature is great, to. I'll be getting to the C64 one soon.

Rory Milne wrote:Just a quick post to say how completely chuffed I am that my Grandstand article seems to have gone down pretty well with most readers, and to say thanks to everybody who has offered praise.

It would be really unfair not to mention the huge part Darran played in putting everything together though. He worked out the format for the feature, he interviewed Rik Morgan from the Handheld Museum site, and he sorted out a professional photographer to take shots of my Grandstand & Hales machines - as opposed to the screenshots and the 'Best of the Rest' machine photos, which I'm responsible for. Oh, and RG's graphic designer did a fantastic job on the layouts / design.

Oscar speech over, but seriously, thanks for all the encouragement guys. I'll be making time to actually read the issue this weekend so that I can post feedback on the rest of what looks like a cracking issue. :)

It was an exceptional article; something I don't say lightly.

You do realise we want follow up articles now though! :D

Not read everything in this issue so far, but what I have has been very enjoyable, Jagfest's Minority report on the Pc Engine was really great, some top games in there, had to get the GT out for a good go on Doraemon/Cratermaze, after reading, really superb game that, and it is a system with a library of games that deserves to be much better known.

Enjoyed the 20 Nintendo games that you have never played, I have only played 5 of those, nice to see Solar Striker in there, Nintendo should have done more shoot-em-ups of this type, did not know anyone at the time with a copy of this game, and anyone I lent it too seemed to think it was rubbish, and it is always worth plugging mole Mania, anyone with a Gameboy should have this terrific little title.

Now the Retrobates game profiles are fun to read and the Gradius 3 one was no exception, to claim it is a truly perfect shooting experience is a bit wide of the mark when it has masses of sprite flicker and huge amounts of slowdown, (Yes I know the arcade version slowed down too, but not this much) but is is a fun game that I spent hours on, no mention of the amazing music and effects either, I wish personally we had got this in Europe instead of Super R-type, but seeing as no one could be bothered to optimise for PAL back then, someone may have pointed out that it would have choked a PAL SNES to death being a full 17.5% slower than NTSC!!

Great to see the glowing review of the wonderful Soulless, it is a brilliant game, well worth every penny it cost for the cartridge version, and with all the extras it is a total bargain.

Really good to read the interview with Jazz Rignall, I always loved to read my mates copies of Zzap and his no holds barred comments on games, his face when I read out the review of Ultimate's Imhotep made him go a bit pale, as he had just shelled out his paper round money on it, because he knew it was a true appraisal of this awful game, sure enough when it had loaded Mr Rignall was absolutely spot on, it was unplayable, really excited to read he now has the domain name for Mean Machines, I hope something comes out of that.

Really must get stuck into the C64 articles next.

Very enjoyable issue. Love the handheld/tabletop games feature... that brings back happy memories. Those things were brilliant fun! Great to see Jaz Rignall in there, too. He was always my favourite reviewer.

Love the Andrew Braybrook thing too. I wrote about all of his games on one of my blogs last year, and a mate of mine turned all the pieces into a PDF booklet, incorporating original ZZAP! reviews. Would anyone object to me posting a link to it (it's on Lulu), or links to my original pieces? The Braybrook fans here might like to give them a once-over. Or I could just put a link in my signature, I suppose...

Mucho gracias!!!!

I love Cratermaze too, the PCE is a great little machine. I would love to do more of these special Minority Reports for other under appreciated consoles.

How about the CD-i, after our discussion in the top ten CD-i games thread, I was stirred to go and find one, I have got hold of a 450 with 19 games, including the two rare Zelda games, and have read your reviews on RVG, and have also picked up Arcade classics, Mutant Rampage, Hotel Mario, and Secret Mission, cannot wait to get stuck in.

Always open minded to new systems.

Suggest it to Darran!!!

I would love to do the CD-i, 7800, Saturn, Jaguar, Lynx and Mega CD or any other systems that don't get much love if I can play the games.

Thanks for the kind words Paul... I did actually read through your blog when I was doing the piece and very much enjoyed it, plus it was dead useful - I woudn't have known Andrew did the C64 Lunattack port otherwise (it's not listed on Lemon 64).

I can't speak for Darran but I can't see any problem in you posting a link for people that are interested in seeing it, and as I said I can heartily recommend it :]

Do you reckon you have a PC-FX or FM Towns Marty in you? I would love to read up more on those systems.

Thats probably a good thing to be honest - I'll only end up wanting them even more after a Retro Gamer spread!

I seriously wouldn't bother with the PC-FX, I had both (in fact I've had most Japanese consoles at one time or another). The PC-FX is full of hentai games and only a small handful of real games. It really was a massive dissapointment considering how much of a gamers console the PC Engine is. The fact that the PCEngine's successor was nothing more than a wank station is shameful.

The FM Towns or Sharp X68000 will do you much better. And both of those still look really sexy as desktop PCs.

Mark.
