I liked the Toejam & Earl article, but I have to admit, it ended very suddenly. I turned the page and had to pause for a moment to absorb the fact that this was, actually, something about Crash Magazine, and not the "rest" of the TJ&E thing gone wrong.

I guess you could say, it felt like my magazine had "crashed." Heh heh. I came down to earth with a "crash".

Also, I liked Latisha. Was she as badly-received as they said?

I think the third game, in general, is a great game. From what I played of it, there wasn't anything bad to say about it. Funny, funky and perfectly playable, Ioved it. This was my experience with the demo by the way - I've had the full game for a long time now but just not gotten around to playing it yet. Unless it spirals downhill badly further in, I see no reason to complain.

I was actually a bit put-off by the third game; up to then, my only experience of TJ&E was the second game, which I'd played to death and loved. The randomly-generated top-down viewpoint was a surprise, and even more so when I discovered that it was a throwback to the first game, and that the second game was actually the exception. So, while I did have fun with the demo of the third game and played it repeatedly, it wasn't really "my" Toejam & Earl, so I never got the full game.

CraigGrannell wrote:I think it would have made a fun DPS, but it's a shame the guys tried to be entirely quirky, rather than providing some insight into the development. We've had plenty of fun interviews in the past that have balanced this (such as the one I did with Steve Meretzky on Hitchhiker's Guide). I must admit I felt a bit short-changed on the ToeJam & Earl piece.

Yup - couldnt agree more - the TJ & E came across as a bit of a flippant arse if truth be told. Really thought it made the article pointless.

Interesting comments.

I liked the really liked the TJ&E article, to be honest it brought back a sense of fun, which is what the original game & I thought games in general should be all about.

What's a DPS? (TLA's confuse me.)

Hey , I always love reading the Feedback thread , it's always chockful of righteous indignation and I always find that entertaining:
Regarding the christmas cover , I couldn't give a fiddlers , maybe because the games mags I read back then didn't really do them , and I'm a bit of a scrooge when it comes to Chrimbo anyway.Seriously though guys here's a compromise , next year.. why not give a free gift of a sticker sheet with some mistletoe , Santa and sparkly tinsel stickers . That way those lads who really really want to pretend it's 1986 and they're reading Crash or whatever can get their little christmas wish , and cover the ...well ..cover in yuletide gubbins allowing the rest of us to get on with actually reading the mag.Liked the Afterburner one a lot by the way.
Anyways , it's good stuff as always , Loved the Playstation section (although I missed the lovely DPS of game screenshots), the TJ&E (never knew about the Starflight connection , and that's a game I'd love to see a retrospection on)bit ,Peter Molyneaux ,DOS and Sid stuff .Liked most of the rest , I haven't got round to reading the Crash article properly yet as I'm not really into the speccy stuff and to be honest I skimmed the 'from the archive' section as I'd never heard of them or most of the games, probably will have a read of them at some point {usually the last place RG ends up before I store it away is beside the ...er throne if you catch my drift , and that's usually where the last few articles get read ..sorry if I put anyone off their breakfast!} .Still though that's he great thing about the mag , there's nearly always something for everyone , even if it means there'll always be one or two articles not "aimed" at you.(I always have a bit of a chuckle at the numpties who skip an issue as it's not totally about "their" computer).
Anyway , Driver next month eh? any chance of a bit about driv3rgate then?

Just finished the issue, again like last month I was really impressed by the magazine.
I think the mag suits me because I am the type of person who is always wanting to learn new things, normally I wouldn't care about DOS, SID, RamJam or Homebrew but thats what makes the magaize so great, I enjoy reading about these things and I end up finding them interesting.
Looking at the Playstation feature I was reminded of the Net Yaroze, I used to buy playstation megazine every month and some of the demos used to come with net yaroze games. At the time I never quite understood them, I used to think that the black PS1 was some sort of prototype for the PS2.
Also some of the things Peter Molyneux said had me laughing.

Yeah, love those Yaroze games. I still play some of them using the demo discs. Blitterboy, Time Slip and Opera of Destruction were my favourites.

I'd love a Net Yaroze PS1 purely for the region-free aspect of it but I'd be scared to use it in case it broke.

Does Retro Gamer #71 include a review or at least a mention of my new book (Classic Home Video Games 1985-1988)? None of the stores near my house carry the magazine.

Yup, it's in the Retro Booty section in in a boxout titled "treasure of the month", bottom left corner of page 14.

Merry Christmas from Greece all of you Retro readers. Issue 71...well average cover but I must say that SID chip is great. Time to learn a little bit of great hardware from older micros.
I must say that I get dissapointed every time I see a war game advertise in my favorite magazine. But thats me... I think war games have nothing to teach more than how to make war to our children. That says all. Especially nowadays with so realistic 3D graphics. So no war games for me and my children this year.

See you all next year I hope in good health :D

I'm not sure if this has been discussed already but I do love the fact that there is a section covering DOS gaming in the magazine this month. Very good. But........ *unbelievable* no mention of the enormously successful run of Amstrad PC machines that actually made IBM compatibles finally cheap enough for the average home user to purchase. We had ours in 1987 (the Amstrad PC1512) and this model was the most popular. I'm just astounded there's no mention of it since this was *the* most available PC gaming platform and really really helped to push PC gaming into homes in the late 80s. Amstrad were at the fore-front of IBM PC compatible machines. Of course, no mention of Amstrad means no mention of the special Amstrad mode that most IBM PC games included and the joystick port on the keyboard that allowed normal micro-switch joysticks to operate with your IBM games (so you could use your mate's C64 joystick / atari joystick / whatever). This was *the* platform to own in the late 80s for IBM gaming and i'm just sad not to see it mentioned, really I am. Oh and let's not mention the photo of Elite Plus (pah!) as opposed to the original Elite that was released for DOS and was the first version to include filled vectors :) Anyway, my main point is the Amstrad stuff, madness not to have it mentioned.

Oh, and the massively popular magazine PC Plus (which started its life off in the late 80s as specifically an Amstrad PC magazine) which is still around now :)

I'll tell you what's surprising about all of that article : how bloody uninteresting Rob Hubbard seems to be! Maybe he keeps everything close to his chest but he rarely has much to say there compared to the other musicians....!
