I was always a big SEGA fan so I played a hell of a lot more Sonic than Mario, plus I always thought Mario, and Nintendo in general, was a bit poncey.

Sonic would always get my vote.

Short answer: Sonic.
Long answer: I always appreciated Mario for the inventiveness of his games, but other than Donkey Kong and Mario Bros, they never seemed all that exciting or fun to me. Grew stale quickly.

Seeing, then playing , Sonic the Hedgehog those first couple times was like getting cataracts removed. I saw what true platforming fun could be. Love the fact he rolls into a ball and has momentum and can roll up & down the environments. Love how when he is a ball, his spikes kill badnicks / break stuff. Loved his world better than Mario's , loved Dr. Robotnik as a villain more, and even the musical themes of the Genny titles were great great stuff. Also loved Super Sonic!

Mario's games are still what they always were to me - high quality but nothing that I MUST PLAY. Maybe its that I just don't like Mario as a character as much. Meanwhile, Sonic's games have somehow lost their way and become pointless, to me (I did LOVE Sonic all stars racing, however). But nothing beats the memory of how Sonic used to be. And I'll still try a new Sonic game with an excitement that Mario never had.

No question about it. Sonic was just a fast hedgehog who acted like an ass. His games didn't even come close to having the charm of the Mario games. Also, Mario made the transition to 3D flawlessly, something that Sonic has yet to do.

Well, in a straight fight, it has to be Mario: He takes out of his toolbox his weapon of choice - perhaps a spanner - ready to attack Sonic with. One may say that he would have to catch Sonic first before striking a blow and I agree that Sonic would turn tails and run at the sight of a big, angry moustache, but that would be proof itself that Sonic can not win as he would prove himself not to be a hedgehog but in fact a chicken.

As far as games are concerned: Mario. Classic platformer action.

His games are always deeper, more varied, more challenging and have more replay value than Sonic's. Of course, if you prefer games where you just whizz through the levels without exploring them and still think that early 1990's 'attitude' is still cool in 2010, then Sonic's for you.

The thing is, if you're of the pro-Sonic camp, there's always the potential for excitement. With the fifty Mario games that are out each year, it's "Oh, another Mario game, great". With each announcement of a Sonic game, people get excited, thinking "THIS IS IT!". It never is "IT", but the excitement's always there. Which is nice.

So yeah, Sonic, always always always.

There are two Sonic games out before the end of the year, both of which seek different ways to once again restore his reputation, neither of which will succeed on any meaningful level.

Mario, on the other hand, continues to beast his way over all Metacritic contenders. Can Sonic manage a 97% average from 87 reviews? Ha! Mario über alles.

Sonic baddies are creative, well drawn and, when you kill them they turn into lovely ickle nice things. YEY
