For some reason we've been getting pre-christmas levels of Spam sign ups over the last few days. I'm checking and culling the new member lists at least once a day so most never even get onto the boards but with work being busy, numbers may slip through. Use those report buttons folks.

I've been on a Gailsky Birkenstock hunt - got 10/11, who reported the other one? Spoiled my perfect record! :(

Yeah surprised how many times that g!t spammed, normally they do just a few to not make it obvious.

People must still use these links as thats why spammers still do it, but again in the year 2011 SURELY most people dont buy anything from sites such as these and the way they advertise show how dodgy they are ?

I hate spammers !

Are there any American moderators? I've noticed a few times that I'll be on here and only a handful of others, if anyone else, when a someone is spamming. At forums I've moderated before I've had to make sure to have people from different time zones to keep a constant alert. Not sure this board necessarily needs it, but just a thought.

In most cases nobody needs to use the links at all, they just want them as widely spread as possible and associated with certain keywords to influence Google's search algorhythm; even if a link only lasts long enough for a spider to pick up on it, their work here is done.

Edit: speaking of which... [Waves to the Google spider as it wanders past]

I'm usually here on and off from Lunchtime to around 10pm....ish. Whenever I log on I check the new users list and kill a lot of the spam accounts before they have a chance to post, similarly most reported spam is nuked within a few hours of being reported. Had a long day today so only just logged on, boards are spam free again. Just goes to show you how much spam is usually killed invisibly without you noticing.

TBH other than around Christmas when our friends in the far eastern spam shops go nuts, we don't really attract enough that targeting time zones is necessary. Typically I'll kill 5-10 accounts and maybe a dozen spam posts per day.

Its not about generating business from the forum posts, mostly its about improving their Google ratings based on the number of sites they exist on, which is why a lot Spam in the early hours of the morning ensuring minimum exposure to people but maximum board time before they're killed.

The spammers are now attaching spam to the Retrobate reviews section on the main site. I've just found one on one of my Retrobates and deleted it. Who moderates the Retobates section?

Send Darran a PM. I know they were talking about appointing someone to moderate it following all the twats copy/pasting reviews from wikipedia and other sites but I'm not sure if they ever actually did it or not.

I've sent Darran a PM. The spaming isn't too bad on there yet, but it could be.
