The Mega Weeviews thread - a humble promotion

Postby KimbleJustice on Mon May 21, 2012 11:34 am

Hello all,

Forgive me for only making a few posts and then making this type of thread (I do definitely intend to stick around - the patter's very nice here and the magazine is a joy), but I have started a Youtube series that I'd like to promote on here: It's called "The Mega Weeviews". It's a series primarily based around the Sega Mega Drive, but with some home computers chucked in - primarily the Amiga and Speccy. This little advert I made will explain everything: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WTvx35e2fM

The first episode deals with the two games that launched the Mega Drive in Japan, Space Harrier II and Super Thunder Blade: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0vA6tkC ... ure=relmfu

I'm hoping to do vids on a rough fortnightly schedule, with preparation for the next vid already underway (Retro Gamer favourite Strider! And Strider II! The one by Tiertex - that's the good one, isn't it? :?)

I'm hoping this will be something a bit different from the usual gaming videos on Youtube - I only really have one rule on picking games, and that's to not cover anything from the NES/SNES. Nothing against them at all - I love 'em, but pretty much everything on there's been done to death, and I don't want to be covering obscure/terrible games like Captain Novolin or Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon or whatever (I mostly want to cover GOOD games, not awful ones)...there's not as much video for the MD, Speccy and Amiga - some people do very good jobs, but I still struggle to find it around a lot of the time, especially compared to the Ninty behemoth. I also want to try and add a bit more context to my reviews than what's usually seen in the wild. Oh yeah, and the cardinal rules: no compound swearwords, no mugging at the camera, no filming the bloody TV screen, no Unregistered Hypercam logos, no faked anger/shouting or anything like that. Ideally, I'd like to be Terry Wogan with an Essex accent, doing entertaining but informative stuff.

So, yeah...your views and (hopefully) your praise are appreciated, but any comments/criticism you have is even more sought after - I'd love to know what you think, what's good and what's not, where I could improve and so on. Thanks for reading/listening to me prattle on!

Presenting Mega Weeview #2...the almighty STRIDER. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hzycj-idbk

I was going to do this as a double bill with the game's awful sequel, but then I thought that it'd be better off on its own. It'd be a 20-minute video otherwise (the previous review was already way too damn long) - and the original's way too good to be paired up with Strider bloody II. Enjoy!

And here's the promised follow-up to Strider - when you do something good, you've got to take something bad...Mega Weeview #3 - Strider II! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9NhxKzxeO4

Good old Tiertex. The review is primarily for the Mega Drive version of the game, but there's a look into the history of the title, how it came to be that a bunch of hacks managed to release a sequel to an all-time great game...it's all in the review! Hopefully you'll enjoy it - I think it's the best one yet!

I've made a switch over to the Amiga for my next review - rushed out for today 'cause, well, it's Euro 2012 day! In this video, I'm looking at one of the more interesting complete rip-off games on the system - Football Glory, a game that took Sensible Soccer and added things like volleys, bicycle kicks, crazy aftertouch and, of course, streakers. CU Amiga gave it a whopping 95% and said it was the new daddy of football games, but did anyone else agree? And what did Sensible Software think about it all? It's all in the review!

Enjoy!

I'm back on my home court for the foreseeable future - once I got to grips with Fraps I was thinking about all the fancy modern games I could do...but nah, sod that - it's Mega Drive time!

The Top 20 Worst Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Games - Part 1 (#20-11)

Bubsy, Ballz, Last Battle...they're all not on the list. Why, there's so many games out there that are much worse!

It was not a pleasure capturing all these nasty titles, and they're absolutely nothing compared to what awaits in the top 10...I think I'll have to do MD greats for a long while after this - perhaps do a series on Streets of Rage or Koei titles or something. Anything but these games. ESPECIALLY Divine Sealing.

Two more reviews:

Deathchase (ZX Spectrum)

This was a lot of fun to do...I don't know how long I've been playing this game for :)

Alien 3 (Mega Drive)

An underrated game. Has nowt to do with the movie, but it's possibly the best tie-in title on the system.

Also, the bottom 20 for the Mega Drive was completed:

#10-6
#5-1

A pretty extensive look back, and those top titles truly are something else...I'll be happy if I never see them again.

Enjoy the vids!
