My New Spectrum Maze Game - WIP Demo

To download a demo of my new game (Bipboi), please click here...

O,P = Left/Right, A,Z = Up/Down

Still very much Work In Progress, but let me know what you think.

I need help with the following (All credit will of course be given to contributors):

1. Graphics - Each sprite is 16x16 with a mask (so 64 bytes per frame). I pre-shift all frames, so no worries there, just design in 7UP or similar
2. Sound FX - Send me your cool FX
3. Cool Graphics to go around the edges (8 chars by 24), where I can put score etc

4. Also, any ideas for a theme etc are most welcome.

The basic idea of this game is:

1. Collect the stars, when you collect enough level is cleared
2. Avoid the nasties

So far, collect and collision are in, and the game resets on collision with enemy.

Enjoy

Well you impressed me ! Liked the main character animation and the collision detection seems to work - although is it a touch too late ? But then i am a bit drunk - i'll check it out again tomorrow !

Feels nice, could probably do with one or two extra bits to spice it up.

Interesting screen layout there. A couple of 32-pixel columns for score/lives, so I take it this is to be displayed vertically? You could design special digit characters which are rotated through 90 degrees to be displayed on each side of the play area for a slightly different look.

Any more gameplay elements in mind for later levels? How about one or two of these:

Time limits
Black holes that suddenly open up in the floor, then disappear
Doors that need to be unlocked with keys
Walls that appear/disappear
Ghost-like enemies that drift around screen, and through walls
A sub-game between levels
Bonuses that speed up/slow down the player
Timebombs to kill nasties

Themes?

Those flying enemies could be turned into vampire bats (additionally you could have some comedy Dracula-style false teeth chasing the player around), with the idea being to collect items such as garlic, a crucifix, a wooden stake and a silver bullet. Perhaps you could have coffins lying about for the player to open - some might contain bonuses, others more vampires to avoid, and a day/night indicator, with enemies pursuing the player during the night and running away during daylight hours.

Alternatively, the player could be a secret agent investigating a foreign embassy to collect secret documents. Additional bonuses might include different disguises for the player to wear which would change the player's appearance. Each disguise might fool a single different type of enemy sprite into ignoring the player. Power-ups might include James Bond-style gadgets to aid the mission.

If all else fails, just bang in any surreal ideas that you think will enhance the game - walking filing cabinets perhaps? Other than that I don't really know, just use your imagination.

Not bad at all, although what the hell is going on with the border??? Pink and green fit inducing flashes!! Maybe its just the emu I'm using (specX)

Border Colours

Postby robpearmain on Thu Dec 15, 2005 5:18 pm

I am using the Border to see where I am in the code.

I use Spectaculator, but will remove the border testing on the next release.

Cheers
