The Survival Horror Thread

Postby jdanddiet on Tue Dec 07, 2010 10:55 pm

I thought I'd start this as there seem to be a few SH fans.

What's your favourite? The obvious ones, Resident Evils, Silent Hills?

Any recommendations or lesser known ones?

At the moment I'm playing Call of Cthuhlu Dark corners of the Earth on the XBOX which can def be classed as SH, tbh it's fricking scary in places!

One i've struggled a bit to get into featured in RG recently - the Gamecube game Eternal Darkness.

I'm quite the survival horror fan. Not enough of them been made this gen... Dead Space and Condemned were decent.. Resi 5 , however, was criminal..imo.

Project Zero''s
Resident Evils.. yes to some, no to others.
Forbidden Siren... I was genuinely impressed by Blood Curse on the Ps3 recently
Silent Hills up to number 3. I had high hopes for Homecoming :(
Alone in the Dark's
The Suffering
Eternal Darkness.. definitely... would really love to see a sequel to it.

The original Fear (Pc version). Not a survival horror game but it still gets me.. especially the last level.
Speaking of Chaosium (Call of Cthulhu) I always liked Nephilim

Not exactly obscure, but System Shock 2. You would always have the chance of a screaming zombie teleport in right behind you, trying to kill you whilst begging you to kill him. Also, the homicidal droids calmly telling you they can't help you if you hide was seriously freaky. Dead Space is another good bet, especially trying to escape the Hunter in the sleeping bay. One of the very few occasions I had to take a break to calm my nerves. Alone in the Dark was pretty scary as a kid, although to be honest I doubt it would be if I played it today.

In terms of sheer scariness, Resident Evil on the Gamecube gets my vote

Oh, Silent Hill 2 without a doubt - creepy-ass horror game is creepy. Incredible imagery and music, which would be cannibalised for later games (those nurses keep popping up :? ). The twist at the end was a genuine shock, and on playing the game after my first time completing it I was a lot more aware of all the subtleties in the story. Now looking forward to trying out Origins, thanks to people's recommendations on this forum!

Without question, Resident Evil 4! Code Veronica and the Silent Hill series apart from Homecoming! Eternal Darkness on the GC is difficult, but awesome all the same! And one of the Evil Dead games is great fun!

I love survival horror.

Silent Hill 2 is also my favourite game in the genre. Nothing beats psychological horror!

Love Parasite Eve and the old Resident Evils as well, although not got round to RE4 & RE5 just yet.

I have to play these kind of games late at night when I'm on my own (for the full effect, there's just no point playing during the day or with company!), so don't really get that much of an opportunity these days. I have the Project Zero series, Siren Blood Curse, D, and a few others waiting to play.

My fav genre along with scrolling beat em ups

Love the Resident evils and Silent Hills.. Silent Hill 2 is probably the greatest game ever gave me dreams about it

Obviously the more obscure games I own
Kuon PS2 incredibly scary Feudal Japanese Survival Horror game that I couldn't play at night.. Nice touch is she becomes scared and start seeing ghosts walking through walls, hanged bodies behind silhouetted windows and hear babies crying and see faces appear in the wall.. Using the L1 to meditate makes this go away to normal rooms

Echo Night Beyond PS2 very slow paced but atmospheric an a Astronaut trapped on a spaceship full of ghosts that have tasks requiring his attention.. I remember the PS1 Echo Night being scary but memorys hazy

Clock Tower 1 Snes awesome got all the endings
Clock Tower 1 + 2 PS1 also scary partically 2 with the unkillable Yoshimitsu lookalike

PS2 Haunting Ground(Capcom) quite expensive plays like Rule of Rose

I'm currently playing the Project Zero's 1 - 4 should keep me going a while

Rule of Rose Combat is terrible but the story is awesome but rather deprived

Parasite Eve 1 superior to the second game

I loved resi 4 but am yet to complete it.
Im at the end of condemned, yet to complete it.
Condemned 2 is still sealed.
Dead space is still waiting to be played, but I have only had it for about a week!

I do like the genre but, as with every other genre, it gets juggled around with whatever spare time I get.

The Forbidden Siren's are a bit of an acquired taste tbh. Siren: Blood Curse (Ps3), I would recommend this first (if possible) the improved visuals really add something, the indoor lighting effects are particularly impressive.

Other elements is the gameplay doesn't feel scripted. One part saw me running away from a demon and rather than the usual one way escape or qte I had a variety options; I chose to run into the toilets and lock myself in a cubicle. However, with the enemies responding to sound and light in the rush I'd forgotten to turn my torch off. In walks the demon.. pads vibrating heart beat style at 90 mph.. the demon starts beating on the door with the door visually bending and showing damage with each hit. Truly pant filling stuff...

I also agree with Negative Creep.. System Shock 2 certainly has its moments. Better than Bioshock.. imo. Stalker also has its moments.

Edit: forgot about the Parasite eves.... D on the Ps1 is also good, imo

I bought Siren Blood Curse for the PS3, completed it and traded it in... wasn't that impressed, I've played much better, and scarier games.

Resident Evil 4, whilst a great game, is not scary in the slightest. The only genuine jump in the game (flaming zombie) is given away in the demo sequence

Yeah I was gonna say, as much as I love RE4, I wouldn't actually class it as survival horror. The emphasis is much more on action, although it is very atmospheric in places.

I absolutely love SH games, have so many favourites but have a bit of a backlog of SH games at the mo so am pretty overwhelmed (Dead Space, both Obscures, Cold Fear, Call Of Cthulhu DCOTE, Resi 5, Forbidden Siren 1&2, Silent Hill Origins, *loads* more). To be boring, my favourite ones are probably Silent Hill 1, SH2, Resi 1, 2 & 4, and I really love both The Suffering games. Don't know if SH-themed FPS games like Condemned and F.E.A.R. fit in here, but I played amd enjoyed them, too.

I never really got on with the first two Project Zero games, haven't tried 3 yet (but have it). Love these types of game so much, I even forced myself to sit through the godawful Deep Fear on Saturn, and am *still* thinking of persevering further with Alone In The Dark on 360.

PS: I never really got on with Eternal Darkness, either, slick game though it is.

As much as I LOVED Resi 4 (it's one of the best games, period, imho) I have to agree that it was rarely that scary. There is one bit I found extremely sinister, though - the end credits. Basically, a montage of illustrations depicting how the parasite virus was introduced to the villagers as though it was a religion, I found that proper creepy and a wonderful way to end such an awesome game.

Xbox Call Of Cthulu.System Shock 2, SH2 (THE finest in the series), Project Zero`s,Resident EVils1-4 (5 is awful), Dead space,Eternal Darkness all get thumbs up from myself.fantastic games.
