Not a chance, the "battle" is still going on, seeing as sales of handhelds are hitting millions still. I reckon all three platforms (Nintendo, Sony and phone) will all exist in balance with each other eventually, each catering to its own.
Specifically, the phones/mobile/tablets have all been going for AWHILE.... each version, and there are many, getting really, really high amounts of sales. Mostly iOS I"m thinking of, but Android as well. And then the utterly absurd amount of THINGS on places like the App Store and such.... Million sellers or not, the handhelds are going to have a VERY hard time catching up. Apple reports 250 million iOS devices sold so far... this was in October of this year that they said this, probably to brag, haha. I have no idea how many Android devices sold, but there's lots of different versions of those since Apple's strictness isnt involved. Though, these two (Nintendo/Sony) seem perfectly content to just compete with each other, rather than competing with the phones. Wheras Microsoft jumped into the phones, and.... I have no idea how theirs is doing, I just know it exists. I'm not too fond of the 360, despite having one, so I dont particularly care how the Windows phone is doing. Android seems content to just fire at Apple, and Apple..... seems not to give a rat's ass and often seems to just ignore everyone else because..... because why not. I dont claim to understand how they do business, I just smile and nod as if I do.
But.... yeah. I dont generally care too much about the sales numbers usually.... I'll buy whatever in the bloody heck I want to regardless.... but it's the game selection that sways me, which is also why I ditched the DS and PSP.. None of them.... the DS, PSP, 3DS, or Vita, can, in my eyes, compare to iOS right now in terms of selection. Hell, the ONLY reason I still have a DS is because of Ketsui Death Label, an expensive import only found on that thing.... and even then, I dont use it much. DS actually used as a coaster right now (no joke). I had a PSP for awhile, pretty much for Monster Hunter, and then it shattered (....sadly, also no joke. Managed to drop the blasted thing somewhere rather stupid. Didnt I feel like a klutz...). I'll buy the Vita, certain devs I like will be developing for it.... but not the 3DS, probably ever. I'd say.... the last handheld I *really* enjoyed was the old Game Boy Color. Loved that. Didnt care for the Advance much, and then shortly after that I developed a loathing for Nintendo.
In reality though, mere numbers dont actually matter all that much. Well, they matter to the companies involved, hah, but to us gamers? Nah. I can think of plenty of consoles Iv'e enjoyed and still own that did NOT sell very well, yet are still quite grand. Only the games matter, and right now, I for one will be sticking with the iOS stuff. I've been way too impressed by it to NOT stick with it. The part where I have about 112 games for it right now also helps.
Either way though, it'll be interesting to see what happens, though I doubt I'll follow all of it too closely. Sales charts are boring.
