Just won an auction (local) for five Neo geo carts for a cheap price. Neo geo was another option for collecting for, so I'm happy to get these. If I don't collect for it I know I'll at least get my money back on them reselling. Paid $60, or 28-29 quid your language :)
*Edited to add games: The Last Blade, Fatal Fury, Fatal Fury 2, Fatal Fury Special, Real bout Fatal Fury Special, Blues Journey. Six in fact. Although you're pretty ****ed if you don't like one on one fighters
For that price they're worth grabbing, I can sell if I decide not to collect for this

Hang on - for get the four others, but The Last Blade 1 AES is worth about €100 at least, complete, and Real Bout Fatal Fury Special, is very nearly worth €100 these days. Basically, you have found an incredible deal  And those prices quoted are for the Jap versions. If these are western versions than you can at least quadruple the above prices. Thats assuming they are AES.... if they are arcade carts, ie MVS, you've still got a really good deal too, though MVS games are generally worth a lot less than home carts.

But... before you sell them on, know this: These are two of the greatest 2D fighting games that have ever been made. Sadly they do not get the recognition that Capcom's fighters get (which they do deserve). At least play them somehow before moving them on. Brilliant stuff.

I'd like to collect again, but rather than a mish mash of stuff in general, thought I'd be specific and collect for one specific console. My immediate thought is Vectrex, or to a lesser degree Colecovision as they were the objects of my desires in my younger days!
But looking for inspiration: What's a good machine to collect for, and why? I like the idea of console over computer, with software on cart rather than magnetic media. :)

i collect only for the megadrive. i have an original md console as well as a nomad. md consoles can be had for peanuts now. the nomad you have to pay proper money for, but its worth it because its beautiful. games wise, you can build up a handy collection without spending too much but also you get to spend money on some real gems. people are also making games for it - or more precisely super fighter team are - or were - I bought beggar prince a short while back. really exciting to get a new megadrive game! its also now worth a mint.

I couldn't collect for one system but I could trim it down to the Atari XL, MD and Dreamcast and be OK with that for a while.

Sorry man, should have been more specific. MVS. Had they been AES, I'd be starting a topic to gloat
I had seriously thought about going for a Neo Geo AES to collect for, but after research tbh it's just out of my league. The cost is to much for me, and the collecting thing is about fun, and enjoying to play rather than accumulate for value, and stressing buying the things. So looking around, it seems many collect Neos in the MVS format, and ironically easier and cheaper to collect for. Down here in NZ there seems quite a few enthusiasts that have a home Neo arcade and collect carts for it. And aside from rare sought after titles, there's always something around for it . And a Neo geo cabinet will look great by the jamma...so much for space saving...!
Saw these carts being sold as a bundle on a local online auction, and they were too good to pass up at the price. There was quite a bidding war going on them, so I just put an auto bid on and switched off- Didn't want to get carried away if the bidding started again! I was surprised later on to find I'd got 'em.
So, will keep them aside and now start looking around for a cabinet, and other carts. If I don't have any joy finding something I know I can sell them and certainly get the money back, but most likely more as well. But as you say, great games I'd be sad to let them go. We'll see what happens...
In the meantime I have the Lynx too. Opted for that as I've always liked the machine, both its visual look and the quality of games for it. And really cheap as for most of the games. And the wee carry bag for the Lynx IMO looks awesome!

Having looked around myself online at current AES prices, I am now beginning to think MVS is the only realistic option for anyone to be honest. AES prices have become silly in recent times :? A couple of years ago I had the option of getting Garou: Mark of the Wolves for €230. Its not at double that at least  And there is a conversion for sale in Spain right now that looks perfect. How can I tell if my Garou, should I get it, be bone fide? You can't without opening it up and looking at the chips and curcuit board.

MVS is far cheaper, and so what if you don't get a real box? The current AES prices are nuts. Defo go for MVS right now. A few years ago I would have recommended AES but now with the amount of conversions and overpriced products I think MVS is the only option. Just keep an eye out for counterfeit MVS games - they too are everywhere

PS - The Land of Birds is one of the world's most wonderful places - you're lucky to live in such a magical location. Up there with Japan in my list of places I want to visit! :)

Thanks for the advice, and feel free to add more anytime! If I can will try and buy the MVS carts local, there's a few around here that have them, these particular ones I bought from the local Arcade/Time Zone distributors. He may be able to sort me with a cabinet too, which would be cool, cos it isn't much fun collecting these things and looking at them miserably before storing them
Yes, very fortunate to live down under, shakes a bit like Japan at times though. :)

Glad to help. Neo Geo collecting, regardless of the format, is a lot of fun. The system has many, many superb games. If you need any help or advice then you can ask me and others on here if you are unsure of what the best games and deals are.

Its great you have a local arcade operator that can sot you out with games. If you end up with bootlegs its not the end of the world on MVS as the layout isn't too much usually. You can tell though if they are real by opening thme up and inspecting the chips and circuit board. There is lots of help and advice on Neo-Geo.com.

If you can sort yourself out with a cab then I'd be very jealous! :) Playing some Last Blade on a cab would be fantastic! 8)

Cheers, I had no idea how to tell counterfeit...will make Neo geo.com a fave and do some homework as well :)
*Edited to add- If I did get a bootleg by accident as long as it played the game it wouldn't really bug me massively as I only want to collect for fun, but if at all possible I prefer not to. Official is good!

There is an extensive forum on Neo-Geo.com dedicated to the topic of counterfeits- "Boot or no Boot" I think its called. Its a daunting place over there, but packed with information from some very dedicated people.... possibly too dedicated - One guy over there bought Kizuno Encounter and Ultimate 11 off another forumite for the AES for US$55,000 a couple of years back!

The thing with MVS boots is that they play fine and as most MVS games are cheap its not a problem for people who just want to play. What is sad about boots however is that they are the ultimate reason why the plug was pulled on the MVS in 2004. Story for another day though!
