A:CM has to be out first. It's supposed to be out in the Autumn, though it was also supposed to be out this month and also several years ago...

I've had it on pre-order for YEARS!

For a while I was rather annoyed about having to wait for this, due to the ending of Episode 2.

But I'm not too optimistic about new games these days so I haven't thought about it in a while.

Re:what is happening with HL3?

'Valve founder, Gabe Newell has attempted to address this question in a recent interview, albeit without actually giving anything away. He explained that the main reason for not talking about the game is to help manage fans' expectations essentially to avoid disappointment over potential delays.
He explained, "We're acutely aware of how much we annoy our fans and it's pretty frustrating to us when we put them into that situation. We try to go as fast as we can and we try to pick the things that we think are going to be most valuable to our customers and if there's some magic way we can get more work done in a day then we'd love to hear about it. Part of the reason that we backed off talking so much about what was happening in the future is that when we've done that in the past, you know, with Half Life 1 it was a year after we originally said it would be.'

I preferred blowing things to bits with a shotgun, myself. HL2 had a particularly meaty shotgun. It certainly beats faffing about hoovering up bits of detritus and flinging them at baddies (circular saws aside, I suppose). Let's not forget also that the gravity gun also gave rise to the irritation of sucking up those wooden pallets and dropping them into radioactive pools so you can walk across them in safety. As long as you can jump onto them accurately while they're bobbing around. Grrr. Jumping in FPSs. GRRR. Onto something that's moving. GRRRRRR!

I'm going to stop now.

Half Life 2 very nearly is retro. It was so far ahead of it's time that it still holds up superbly against other FPS game today, but we need to be realistic here, it's an 8 year old game that runs on last gen hardware.

You can't just pick and choose what is retro, based on whether you enjoy playing it or not. On that kind of basis Bubble Bobble would never be classed as retro because it's still better than many 2D platformers that have been released years later. :?

I dont tbh, I truly dont believe it has been bettered, maybe equalled, but not bettered by anything since it has come out. And it still looks more than good enough imo. I would rather play through that than any cod/fear/halo title any day of the week. I consider playing through it again at least once per week and if I had the time I most certainly would. It is so far towards the front of my mind that I couldnt possible consider it as retro.

Me too, it's easily my favourite FPS game of the last decade and I've played through it start to finish on both Xbox and Xbox 360...but it is nearly a retro game. The problem is (not saying you do this exactly) a lot of people will only consider a game to be 'retro' if it has visuals that obviously don't look as good as more modern games, or game mechanics that have been bettered by more modern games, etc. There's people on this forum that still won't accept that the Dreamcast is retro and probably still won't in the year 2020. Half Life 2 was a game ahead of it's time, Valve didn't rush it and spent the time making it as great and detailed as possible for the period it was released....as a result it was far superior to anything else that was around back in 2004, and now still holds up superbly well as everyone else has taken a long time to catch up to the high standard it set.

It's still a ageing game that was designed to run on ageing hardware though. If it's not retro already, it soon will be.

Great as it is, cracks starting to show if you play it today-blatant attempts to add length to the game (cross long bridge, then make your way back again, grrr!, long trips on the water ways etc).

Plus it uses that FPS staple of...level after you've amassed horde of kick-arse firepower, we're going to take all the guns and stuff away from you and leave you with just the gravity gun.

No, give me set pieces i can try out my new toys-papa got a new toy, wants to play...
