Everything that's new is a gimmick? I don't see how you can claim that, tbh.

I just mean when something new that appears unnecessary compared to what's done the job just fine previously. If it's successful and catches on it's no longer considered a gimmick.

Is that always true though? For instance, the Wii caught on massively but many people still seem to consider the Wii Remote motion controls to be a gimmick.

It's because many people are ignorant and dismiss things they haven't even tried. Especially on forums.
Motion controls are fine for what they do. The problem is, that many games just used them in an unnecessary and gimmicky way - even a few Nintendo games.
But Zelda Skyward Sword, Red Steel 2, Wii Sports Resort and especially using the Wiimote pointer for aiming in Metroid Prime etc. showed some pretty cool possibilities for different gameplay which haven't been possible before.
If you like it or not - that's another story. But it worked and it made these games stand out.
The Wii U gamepad can do the same thing. There is a lot of potential (if someone owns a DS it is easy to imagine some of it). We just have to see, if developers make use of it.

For the last decade, Telegames has focused exclusively on portable gaming systems including Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, and Apple iPad. The Wii U will be Telegames’ first involvement with game consoles since PlayStation and PC products were developed and published in the early 2000’s. The critically acclaimed and family friendly IP of Telegames will bring exciting additions to the Wii U and its unique gamepad.
