What do you want from the next generation of consoles?

Postby JackBurton-Me on Sun May 06, 2012 8:24 am

There's going to be a lot of speculation about hardware etc as we edge closer to new consoles in the next couple of years, but what do you actually want from the games?

Me, I want to see some depth and some imagination. I've enjoyed this generation to a degree, but there's now no more releases I'm really looking forward to. I enjoyed the Wii for about a year, but it's now gathering dust. My PS3 is used for playing PES 2012 and for streaming videos. I've enjoyed the Uncharted games, SF4, Read Dead Redeption and one of 2 others but most releases I've looked forward to have ended up really disappointing. Skyrim, LA Noire, I'm looking at you.

Now the stream of FPS and (yawn) Post Apocalyptic games looks to be all there is. I'd love a good co-op platformer like World of Illusion and I'd love some adventures with the heart and imagination of stuff like Cinemaware's releases on the Amiga. If decent design could be combined with the power of new consoles, we could have some amazing gaming experiences.

What would you like to see?

I wouldnt get your hopes up with that one.

As the cost of making games increases, publishers are less and less willing to take what they percieve as "risks". This is why so few CREATIVE and interesting games get to retail, as far as consoles go.

Those guys go with "what works", which is usually the same damn thing over and over again, and they have a MAJOR tendancy to just repeatedly mimic something, if that something made big bucks. Like WoW, and how every bloody MMO tries to BE WoW instead of being it's own thing.

I barely have any games for my PS3 either, and my 360 is imports only. Havent really enjoyed this gen, and the annoying trends dont exactly seem to be waning..... no, they just get worse.

As such, simply not bothering with the next consoles. PC gaming and iOS gaming are giving me everything the consoles ARENT, and then some.

I would like to see an improvement in reliability and smaller, quieter consoles for starters. Maybe get shot of optical formats. And I would love to see more old school type games being released, titles such as like world of illusion which the op mentioned, Flashback, Another World, Strider etc. They could be made fantastic in this gen, let alone the next. Less realism and more escapism would excite me more.

From Sony I expect a complete overhaul of the prehistoric PSN, its vile! If they want to push didgital content as the next big thing as opposed to physical media then they need something that at least functions correctly and doesnt do so at a snails pace.

No motion controls
No call of duty
Dedicated servers for console games.
More co-op sidescrollers and platform games. World of illusion and TMNT are great examples.
More revists to older franchises, ie/ streets of rage ,golden axe, earthworm jim, abes odyssey, jet set radio, donkey kong etc

+1

But we know it won't ever happen, as the kids nowadays (apart from probably a select few), would look at it, stick their tongue out at it, and go back to shouting abuse at other people on Modern Warfare, mainly because the market today has been saturated with the same product, but with a new name and a lick of (crumbling) paint. A shame, really.

I want a controller with a d-pad only and no more than 8 buttons, and games I can pick up and play without having to wade through pages of txt or 10 minute long intros, aNd especially no bloody game installing and update patches, no drm and Internet on only when playing, I want games to be finished when I buy them....sorry I know I'm asking for too much now.

- Physical media
- No launch DLC or petty 'Capcom-style' DLC
- Better reliability
- Less focus on games consoles as media hubs or at least having a cheaper version available that just plays the games.
- No more of that retailer-exclusive content b0llocks
- Don't have Ltd Editions/steelbooks for every friggin' game released - there's nothing special about them anymore!
- Less generic sequels

Obviously the above list is like wishing to win the lottery five weeks in a row - never gonna happen - but that's why I have retro consoles/games from the days when gaming was more 'pure'.

What i want to see;
More veriety in the types of games on offer.
More games that offer greater depth in gameplay and (or) story and (or) visual style (Rayman Origins, Sonic Generations, Majin & the Forsaken Kingdom, El Shaddai, Ressonance of Fate, Vanquish et al,) rather than just trying to be the biggest best looking game on the block.
Dare i say it, less fps games
The return of expansions for games (see nights of the Nine, Shivering Isles etc)
I'd like to see the Japanese developers doing what they do best, rather than thinking they have to copy western developers.
Cheaper games especially cheaper if they are downloadable from XBL & PSN.

What i dont want to see;
DLC
The restriction of content in a game and on a disk that people have paid for, just so publishers can charge them twice.
Less Patches (games shouldn't be released in such bad states as they have been this gen.)
Less market domminance by EA and Activision
Pass Codes (especially for single player games)

Definitely this ^^^. I love the crazy ideas and anime-styled RPG's that come out of Japan so it's always annoying when you see Japanese companies trying to 'be' Western. I think Capcom is a big example of this kind of stuff going by some of the games they have been behind this gen and their continuing outsourcing of their franchises to Western developers.

Another great point. While glitchy games and bugs have always been around, there are massive amounts of crippling issues with modern games. Almost every major release seems to 'need' patches or updates to make it work how it should do. I'll still never forget a news story I read about Dragon Age Ultimate Edition on PS3 where (the initial copies at least) had a DLC pack that didn't work if selected from the menu. Surely testing the bloody menu would be one of the biggest things to do?

THIS

This is when I lost interest in consoles. After the original XBOX I lost my love for new consoles.

Bring back dedicated gaming hardware, and nothing else.

I really cant understand the drive behind Japanese developers wanting to copy western developers, as its really doing them a diservice imho. I think western gamers like Japanese games for the way they are, as there is a certain style to them, visually, gameplay and story wise, that can only come from their unique culture and history. Taking those things away for a western approach is just plain wrong, and its clearly not working at all by recent accounts. Also all this talk about the Japanese gaming industry in decline and needing to embrace western styles and games is a big load of censord, when have any of these top industry analysts ever been right and know what they are on about, its Japanese developers copy and pasting western styles and games in general that will cause them to decline.
