Pokémon - favourites

Postby Lunar51 on Sat May 12, 2012 3:56 pm

As the name would suggest, I'm hoping to start a discussion about favourite pokémon.
I'll start the ball rolling!
My favourite is starter is Bulbasaur, because he rocks.
Before anyone asks, I'm not one of these people who choose their team based on stats. My chose is always based on the ones i like, not the most powerful.
Also, what's everyone's favourite pokémon team?
:D

I love Porygon and all his evolutions (pain in the ass to get Z though, as I recall). The original is the best though. I also like Solroc and Lunatone, which also caused me a lot of grief to obtain in Soul Silver. I think I had to level up the safari zone for God knows how long. They look cool in the Pokewalker!

Magmar. Anybody saying otherwise is wrong.
Had one on Blue i trained to level 80 or something.

Good call on Porygon too. Basically, ALL Duck pokemon are amazing.
I asked for orange. It gave me lemon lime!

Bad-ass legendaries Mewtwo, Lugia and Ho-oh are probably my faves. As well as being cool, they remind me of the first two gens of Pokemon and the good times I had with those games before the series started going downhill in terms of monster designs.

Other faves would have to be Arbok, Charizard, Arcanine, Lapras, Rayquaza, Salamence and Tyranitar probably.

Also worth mentioning that I loved Ken Sugimori's original watercolour paintings for the original 251 Pokemon prior to the GBA games. Stuff like this:

Ken Sugimori's art was always a favorite for me.

I used to have those little picture viewer gashapon things that were full of Sugimori Pokemon art, some of it alternate bits that are harder to find online. He still does the 'main' art but it doesn't look the same without the watercolour effect. The original stuff was reason enough to but the TCG cards from the start through to the Neo expansions.

I'd love some sort of artbook of the original stuff if such a thing exists?

I would definitely say that overall, the first two generations were far superior to the later games in terms of monster design.

If you ask me, the generation after Black 2 and White 2 should be a complete reboot with a clean state. 150 new monsters, no crossover at all with the previous series. It's what the game really needs to be appealing to both newcomers and lapsed fans. I'd love to get back into it big style, but with the size of the pokedex now, it's really off-putting. I'm surprised Nintendo and Gamefreak haven't caught onto this. I miss the accomplishable goal of the R/B/Y and G/S/C pokedex.

I've just asked my son and he's of the opinion that Heracross is the way to go. I asked him why and he said it was because he caught it as a shiny and trained it up to level 100 and it was the right nature.

I hope that means something to someone, cos it sure doesn't to me

@speedlolita....if you don't get a yellow cart soon, let me know. I might still have a cart left from my GB cull, up in the loft somewhere. I'm fairly sure i kept all the pokemon carts....but i can't guarantee it without getting up there for a look.

Did he EV train it?

Natures dictate which stats a pokemon is beneficial and not in. For example a modest nature denotes plus sp.atk and minus atk. Only really need this for metagame though.

I'd love a Ken Sugimori art book.

@nokgod, thanks - I'll keep it in mind.

Ah well, EV training isn't everything. It's quite fun though.

And cheers, have a look whenever you're up there next.

I like Heracross too. Can I also just throw up Combee, too, for best Pokemon. Occasionally you do get great designs from the later games. I do love the ones that are a bit abstract, or ones that err on the side of minimalism.
