Are you a gaming purist?

Postby samhain81 on Fri Jun 01, 2012 12:33 pm

Purist, for lack of a better term.

What I mean is, for retro/classic games, do you prefer to play them only on their originally intended console? Thus, never playing them through roms, or re-released digital downloads, regardless of how cheap they may be sold, because you simply prefer the experience (through nostalgia etc) of playing them on their original console?

If not, is it a case of you don't care what they are played on now, or you would love to play on original consoles, but don't have the space for all these original systems, so you play them on through whatever means?

How do you feel about this?

Honestly, would love to see a statistic, so I'm putting up a poll as well, as I'm really interested on the general feeling from all of you.

Most definately yes.

I always play games on their original systems unless it's MAME.

I voted no. If i were a purist in that sense I'd miss out on a number of games. Yes, I like to play on original hardware. I enjoy the whole experience of playing around with old computers as well as loading and playing games. But I'll still happily emulate if it's an option. Sometimes emulation is the only way I can play and I'm happy with that. I've happily paid for rereleases and remakes on XBLA,iOS, & VC too.

So, yes, not a purist.

I used to be completely over the top mental purist. All my games had to be in their original region if possible (which meant a large Super Famicom and Famicom collection for example), had to be boxed, complete, and in mint condition, and had to be on the original hardware. Money and space have meant I have had to forego all of that in the last couple of years, but I think it's better for me. I don't NEED all of that crap in my life. If I can play these games on my laptop, with the original controller via a usb thing, I'm happy. I still have a pretty big collection of N64, Playstation and other things that I can't be bothered emulating, and all my handheld stuff (about 150 Game Boy games for starters) is the real deal. Doesn't have to be boxed and complete anymore though, I'm happy with anything that will play.

The (game)play's the thing!

More or less. I also make use of flash cartridges/modchips sometimes, but always play games on the original hardware if possible. If emulation is the only option I usually don't bother.

Couldn't give the slightest crap about remakes/re-releases.

I voted the third option. I always go for the original product where possible but there are exceptions due to lack of space. One example would be the N64; I have some games on the Virtual Console purely because a) I didn't get on with the N64 controller b) there are only a handful of games on the N64 that I actually want to play so it seemed senseless to keep another console lying around for them.

The other exception would of course be arcade-only stuff that I have to use MAME for.

The final exception would be if there was a regular download of a game available that cost an obscene amount of money to purchase in original form. As much as I enjoy owning the real thing, it's impossible to justify spending hundreds on something I can download for a few quid or own as part of a compilation.

Couldn't you just plug your PC into your TV? That's why I tend to do, although it's handy to be able to emulate most systems on the hop with a netbook.

Anyway, I'm a gaming purist in the sense that it's about the games for me. So long as playing them under emulation doesn't impair the experience, and I understand that this will vary from person to person, I've no issues at all with it.

I play things in any capacity that allows me to play them. I haven't got the money or the floor space to accommodate much stuff at the moment so provided I can play the games, I am happy!

If possible, the originals. However it's not always financially possible, so I will buy the ports/downloads on certain games. Chrono Trigger would be a good example, since there is no way I can justify the cost of buying a boxed original

I would like to play them on the old units, but time, space and simple convenience makes it unworkable.

Give me a powerful PC that can emulate all the machines (but read the actual official discs ala ePSXe) and I'd be happy as pie.
