worst designed console... functionally or aesthetically

Postby morch-uk on Fri Jun 08, 2012 8:26 pm

as im messing about trying to get my saturn to read memory cartridge, this is up there.... but what is the worst designed or badly made mass console in your opinion?

i'd probably say the xbox 360 first models, cause of the lack of general space ie might as well be nil, and the fact it was obviously rushed through long term testing so it had massive heat issues, causing all the RRODs

Mega Drive with Mega-CD and 32X connected.

Three PSUs for heaven's sake... which, because of their chunky size, don't fit properly into my plug extension adaptor!

Yeah, you need an extra adaptor going out of that adaptor to fit them all in - well worth it though :D

Oh dear, here comes the ridiculous Jaguar hate. How predictable

I don't know a single a person who has used a Jaguar pad that has had a problem with it. Out of the many shows I have taken my Jaguar to I have never heard anyone once say "Wow, this controller sucks", unlike the N64, and my Jag always gets a lot of attention.I am not even going to dignify the last post there by Mr Atari Troll himself with a response.

For me its the C64GS with the Amstrad GX4000 in second, both consoles are utter garbage but the C64GS wins due to being possibly the most ugly thing ever designed:

None of the mass produced stuff is that bad IMO. The Jag controller gets some stick but I find it no clumsier to use than the standard Dreamcast controller and it's a lot better than the N64 controller (which seems to get worse and worse with every time I revisit the machine for a play).

Real ugliness dwells in gaming's obscura. The Gakken TV Boy is a wonderful monument to bad design and usability. Until we see something as bad as that knocking about again we've really got very little to complain about.

I admit I didn't put it quite like that, but I did tell you I didn't like the controller at the last Aldershot event.

Easy for me, the NEC PC-FX, after the legend that was the PC Engine, NEC threw away all their hard work by releasing this awfully designed system, the only redeaming feature was it could playback Jpeg video a 30fps, which was totally useless for an decent games, hardware sprite wise it was no more powerful than a SuperGrafx, all at a time when the Saturn and PSX came out in Japan! A real wasted opportunity and defo IMO the worst designed console for making decent games.

Which one were you using? The normal one or the Pro Controller?

If we're talking proper fugly then pretty much any 8-bit Commodore system ever made.

As for other Commodore systems, the Amiga 500 looked a mess what with its innards exposed with the floppy disk drive opening. The Amiga 600 looked toy-ish. Amiga CD32 looked ungainly but at least the CDTV and Amiga 1200 looked okay.

Moving onto other brands, this for me is by far the ugliest system I own,

The fact it has quite possibly the most useless and uncomfortable to use joypads I've ever had the misfortune to experience using (yes, even worse than the NES pad) makes it functionally appalling too, imho.

The red, green and blue keys of the Amstrad CPC464's keyboard looked garish too - not unlike its graphics it could be said!

On the subject of fugly consoles...

Pass the sick bucket already!

SNES looked like a Fisher Price toy, Mega Drive II looked nasty in comparison to the wonderful-looking Mega Drive, Xbox looked cumbersome and Game Gear just looked cheap and ugly.

erm, what? The floppy drive for the 500 is internal, have you pulled yours apart or something?

I'm fully aware the A500's FDD was internal.
