PS1 Mille Miglia

Postby rossi46 on Thu Jun 21, 2012 5:27 pm

I received this classy game in the post today and I must say, it's very much like the original Need for Speed. But with better graphics. And cars that handle.

Right now, my PSX is enjoying a pretty big renaissance as I endeavour to track down titles that I may have overlooked first time round. Mille Miglia is a real gem.

Has anyone else in here played this?

If it is the top down/ isometric racer in the arcades, i do remember it - its one of the best examples of the genre.

Its not related to the arcade game of the same name, its a more typical PS1 racer based on the same theme.

What is wrong with the handling of Need for Speed?

I'm sure I've played this off a demo disk but didn't think much of it. The isometric style of the arcade game was visually impressive, but made it difficult to see far ahead.

For me, the NFS handling was slow and unresponsive. And the dinosaur noises which represented the tyres screeching was bizarre. Don't get me wrong, I ploughed millennia into NFS, but mm is better by far.

IMO.

I thought the handling of NFS was superb, nice and heavy and you actually had to slow down for corners. Agree about the tyres though!

MM looks pretty decent in vids. Really nice and solid visuals as a smooth frame rate. Not played it myself though.

I rather think you are.

I did think with Ray Tracers it'd look great in an emulator at high res, upscaling those sorts of games can really look good.

Obviously the games have dated heavily but mid-nineties 3D on games like Ray Tracers is something I really like. Takes me back to when arcade gameplay was exciting us with flashy new visuals and so on.

Ray Tracers in general plays well plus has fantastic music and styling so - from my experience - it's another case of gameplay over graphics anyway.

There's also a C64/Amiga game of the same name, based on the early years of the race. You had to drive a thousand miles, maintaining and repairing your own car.

TBH even when they were brand new I felt PS1 games were generally quite harsh with jaggies, pop-up, rough textures 'n' what not.
