I wonder if this will be the basis of the PS4, or will Sony try to wring one last generation out of physical media first?

I'm sure there will be an opt in or an opt out option for this.

I really enjoyed playing the PC demos online with Gaikai, little disappointed that it has been brought out by Sony, hopefully they keep things ticking over for the PC market and dont take it all for the PS3/4 owners.

and assuming they know what they are talking about, could there be plans for two console options, physical or cloud or even a combination of the two?

this is the part that stands out.
Not only that, but there's also the fact that native 60FPS games thrive on precision response - Street Fighter or Call of Duty, for example - simply won't play as well via the cloud, no matter how much infrastructure improves. Multiplayer games could also feature additional latency between players, and won't match the work netcode engineers have done with cutting-edge P2P experiences - like Uncharted 3's multiplayer mode, for example.

i wouldn't know if it's just waffle, anybody with the technical knowledge want to look it over?

Interesting. Considering it was revealed at this years CES, that Gaikai struck a deal with LG to have online gaming functionality within their forthcoming range of TV sets. This suggesting, that with the help of Gaikai, the usual hardware cycle could well & truly be over in the near future (if cloud gaming catches on). Could this be the killer app for Sony's brand of TV's? Perhaps no more Playstations after the PS4.

I read it's primarily designed to serve up PS1/PS2 games via streaming. They're not interested (and the tech certainly isn't yet able to) stream full-on PS3/PS4 HD games.

So yeah, Sony are basically going to be asking for money to stream their back catalogue games instead of updating them for download. Plus the subscription-based nature of the service means they can turn them off any time they like.

SO glad I never bought a PS3 now. SO glad Sony killed my interest in them with their horrible pre-PS3 release bullshit!

Good point... although perhaps he was already 'wealthy' and now stands to become 'extremely wealthy'. Semantics, maybe. Perhaps I should have said 'an even wealthier man'. :D

The main technical issue is latency. In layman's terms this is the amount of time it takes between you doing something with your controller and it appearing on screen. This can be as low as a single frame of video which is about a sixtieth of a second for a well set-up PC or console. The best that a streaming games service can currently offer is more like a sixth of a second, and that's under ideal conditions; you can add the usual lag you get when playing on-line on top of that. It might not sound like much, but it can make all the difference in very twitchy games, especially beat 'em ups and platformers. Also, if you get a situation where streaming players are competing against people running a local copy of a game, the latter will be at a serious advantage; hence the comments that it'd essentially be a second class service.

Things should get better with next generation network technologies, which promise to bring the latency down further though. Get it down to below about a twentieth of a second and there'd be little discernible difference between playing a game locally and streaming it. Still, that's the future and I'm not so keen to be an early adopter.

Hopefully they'll keep it all on the PC and not inflict it on PS3/4 owners!
