Wipeout 2097, rage racer and speed freaks are the only PS1 racers I can still get on with. One of the problems I have with modern racers is that there are too many tracks and touraments, give me a few tracks i can learn to death anyday. I remember v-rally and rollcage being very over rated at the time, can't imagine the years have been kind.

Would you count coolboarders 1 as a racer? the tricks are pretty limited.

I found that to be a problem with xbox PGR2. Many of the tracks were just 1 or 2 corner variations but just enough to make them unfamiliar without being different enough to be interesting.

I suppose it is kind of a racer...

Cool Boarders 1 (1996)
Cool Boarders 2 (1997)
Cool Boarders 3 (1998)
Cool Boarders 4 (1999)
Cool Boarders 2001 (2000)

I always preferred the 2nd game (above) to any of the others.

Of course Cool Boarders is a racing game, its just not a driving game.

Christ knows what the Rapid Racer fans are on about, better than Wave Race my ass, the game is a total POS, it feels like you're sliding a boat around on ice, complete waste of £5.

Whoa, I've always been a fan of racers, and the PS1 surely had a lot of great ones. Totally agree on the beauty of CTR (definitely better than Mario).

Nobody has mentioned World's Scariest Police Chases yet... I'd say between a Driver and a Chase HQ rip-off, technically not brilliant, I think it's outdriven by Driver on every aspect but still can be quite fun. I remember finishing it, despite its flaws it's not bad.

And thanks to you guys I just discovered Motor Toon Grand Prix 2 and got it from PSN Network... it's a bargain at 4.99€. What a brilliant game, can't believe I had missed it :D

It feels like a boat being forced down a fast flowing river. Actually it is very good.

Ive not seen it mentioned, apologies if it has but South Park Rally is worth seeking out. Rock Hard to boot as well.

As for Toca, Toca 2 is miles better than World Touring Cars, there is something about it other than the handling that makes it stand out it's just appears to be a much better game

V-Rally is excellent and not over rated :)

F1- 2000 by Ea iirc is also fantastic!

I didn't think V-Rally was at all good, it just didn't seem to drift but V-Rally 2 was excellent.

I didn't realize there were so many racers on the PS1.

Some faves of mine back in the day had to be Porsche Challenge, V Rally, Wipeout 2097 and the original Ridge Racer (my reason for getting the PS1 in the first place).

Porsche Challenge still holds up well, its one of those games where you need to take a little time to learn how to drive to get the best from it. Best audio seagulls ever too.

Like hell it does, the game has pretty much zero physics, even Diddy Kong Racing has significantly better water physics than this piece of crap, you'd might as well be sliding down a slope made of glass.

Rollcage is certainly not overrated & has aged better than most racers on PSone.

Not at all. If you watch Powerboat racing then you see the way the boats lurch along the sea and are tricky to turn because of this. Rapid Racer does just that and it feels tough to play as a result.

Diddy Kong is racing rubber rings with a hairdryer stuck to the back, totally different thing.

Yeah i also thoroughly enjoyed Rapid Racer. A good frame rate, nice courses and some top tunes by Apollo 440. The crafts are hard to control but i would imagine that's how it's meant to be. It feels like you are fighting against water currents and the waves as you smash into them Once you get the hang of it you can complete races without getting into any trouble.

Not sure if its been mentioned yet as i havn't read the entire thread but Porsche Challenge was a fun racing game.
The square is a great shape, and one that is criminally underused in modern game design. In the push to ever more granular, chaotic environments, games have lost sight of the simple pleasures of right angles and straight lines.
