For me Rapid Racer was great fun in short bursts but had no real depth. I personally did prefer Hydro Thunder - and on the N64 too - I've got both versions and the N64 Hydro Thunder is closer to the arcade original.

It's great to see so much love for Crash Team Racing too (better than Mario Kart 64 for me!) Love both, but Crash wins for me. What a shame the PS2/Cube/Xbox sequel (Crash Nitro Kart) was so poor!!!

Hydro Thunder was very good. DC Version was my favourite.
The square is a great shape, and one that is criminally underused in modern game design. In the push to ever more granular, chaotic environments, games have lost sight of the simple pleasures of right angles and straight lines.

Is this an excuse to post pics of not only the two best racing games on PS1 but also two of the best box arts ever!

I always preferred Wipeout 3SE for having a selection the original tracks with the later game engine.
Though I never really got into any of them - just one-off games occasionally.

Over the last few days I have been playing a few PS1 racers.

Porsche Challenge feel so dull nowadays. I always liked the handling but the thought the track design was lacking and it still feels very poor. Also the music is terrible. It is still fairly fun and looks ok but not a classic.

Rapid Racer is something I still really like. It is difficult at times but if you use analogue control you can really move the boat with precision to reduce the lurching it does. I really enjoy this game.

Need for Speed still feels great today. The presentation is fantastic and the car handling is very good. You really have to drive well to win and things like heavy braking reduces turning ability as it should.

Another racer I have been playing is a JP only title that I picked up because it was cheap and I like the cars. It is called The Real Racing:Toyota and it is a simple series title that cost 1500 yen from new. It has 9 tracks and 13 cars but 16 in a race at one with some very aggressive AI which makes it bundles of fun to play. Good frame rate and a variety of effects such as fog, rain and different times of the day makes it great fun. It was also released under the name Advan Racing as a normal title i think.

Wise From Your Gwave..

So I finally gave Rapid Racer a go... effin' brilliant.. and it feels exactly how a speed boat reacts

I've only played the one track so far, but I can tell I'm going to enjoy it :D

Also thanks to this thread, I tried the Splashdown games... Rides Gone Wild... I nearly cried laughing at the intro, the games ain't too bad either..

This is one racer on the PS1, that I still love to this day! Loved the controls then, and still love them today. The tracks feel dated, as does the music, but the gameplay is one aspect that has never dated with the game. I love it.

Glad you liked Rapid Racer, a good game that seems to get overlook. As for Splashown, the first game is a better game overall and still looks good. I would give that a go.
