You think a new Android device is more interesting than a brand new console from one of the big three? Come on, I've played Android so you're not going to fool me with that. The lack of any quality control has left it a hotbed for absolutely unplayable, horrendously bad crap. That's not to say there are no good games (I like ShadowGun and Temple Run and... actually that's about it) but 80-90% of the games on there are a broken, unplayable mess that would have been laughed out of the room as PD games on the Amiga. Twenty years ago.

Welcome to mobile gaming

.....or PC gaming also, as it has exactly the same problems. The trick with mobile gaming though, is knowing where to LOOK. Things like the App Store, for iOS? Horrid. Absolutely horrid, and completely worthless, for finding games. I have no shortage of good games on my iOS devices. Over 200, at this point. And these all being games I honestly consider GOOD, not games that amused me for 5 minutes and then got put away (I just delete those). But then, I dont browse the App Store (ever), and know to look in specific other places, for info on available & upcoming games.

It's easier with consoles, because these big publishers jump up and down and scream alot and throw things at people to get their attention for some huge game release. Wheras, with mobile (and with PC indie gaming), a really, *really* amazing game might be made by like, ONE guy, who releases it...... with absolutely no fanfare whatsoever. You either know EXACTLY where to look to find something like this, or you never know it existed at all.

I dont do Android, but I'm betting it has just as many screwball issues of this sort as Apple's bloody App Store does.



......that being said, at this point, I'd honestly currently be thinking along the lines of DPrinny there; a new console release is, at most, going to elicit a blank stare from me right now..... but a new iOS device causes me to want to throw money at Apple in the hopes that it makes the thing come out YESTERDAY.

Only downside to it is the face of mobile gaming is Angry birds - The worlds most played crappy game.

Whilst there are indeed a lot of great Android games, you'll be playing none of them on this thing as they all need a touch screen. Quite what it will offer, I'm not so sure, but beyond ports of the usual open source favourites - presumably emulators included - I really wouldn't be expecting a huge amount.

For that price you're not going to get a lot of graphical and processing power; think Raspberry Pi and you're probably in the right ball park.

Its Kickstarter goal was $950,000. The total pledged at the time of writing stands at $3.1m with another 28 days still to go. I suppose the main point of interest is the $99 donation, which amounts to a preorder (albeit one with an element of risk, I suppose). Over 20,000 $99 pledges have been made. I think they're aiming for a release March 2013, although if this flood of interest is more than they anticipated, they may have to draw up new plans.

As far as capability is concerned, I have tried out a few games like Sacred Odyssey from my Tegra 2-based smartphone. It's not really all that practicable to actually play them on the big screen from a touchscreen phone, but it did give me an idea as to what the device is capable of. The games looked to be of about PS2 level graphically, which isn't bad. The Ouya will have a Tegra 3, of course, which should significantly improve things. 3D-wise it won't rival current gen controls, but it could become a machine offering a XBLA/XBLIG style of gaming, albeit with less restriction. The likes of Limbo, Braid, Super Meat Boy etc. would be ideal for this device, I think. Also, it could become a happy hunting ground for indie shooters and the like. Fingers crossed!
