Although now used to the shield attack, I am finding an awfully wide spread of special point icons to collect as a result, most of which I cannot help but not collect try as I might, in stead of a focused 'tower' of icons allowing for majority collection of. Most annoying, especially as collection means I can challenge the trillion-score zone. Hmm....

The trick with collecting medals and thus scoring points, isnt actually so much about COLLECTING the medals.

It's about being where they appear in the first place.

When you've got a large (as in, not a one-hit popcorn foe) enemy that sprays lotsa crap at you, use the shield, and charge at it as the shield is flaring; place your ship *ON* the firing point that all of the bullets are coming from, at least until the shield flare stops. Each bullet the thing fires while you're on it is instantly a medal and instantly collected, and that generally means ALOT of medals. You're invincible starting just a split second after you start holding the button down to shield, up until a moment after the shield vanishes (which is when you should back off).

There isnt even one enemy or boss in the entire game (again, aside from popcorn types, simply because they're not worth it) that you should specifically avoid doing this to. Generally, large enemies like that, you want to have them pop right as your shield fades; depending on which ship you've chosen, and thus the damage you're doing, can change the timing of this.

This is one of the reasons I love this game so much, it's the ONE shmup that lets me do what I want to, which is charge at things and ram into them, and have it actually ACCOMPLISH something.

Edit: And this game has reminded me of exactly why I started hating boats in these games to begin with, which is because THIS game had the original boat that pissed me off beyond all else. I hate that thing. So much.

It's the easiest boss in an easy game where I can do the whole damn thing without bombing/dying, but 60% of the time against that accursed demon boat I'm GOING to crash into something stupidly. I dont know why. I never did know why. But it's always been the case, and still is today. I dont get hit by ANYTHING ELSE unless I totally forget some enemy is there or ram something when trying to get medals. But I'll smack into whatever that bloody boat happens to be firing at the time.

Simply amazing.

Anyway, I was gonna try to do a proper run and post a score tonight, but after a few practice runs, my arm hurts like hell, so that's not happening for a few days yet.

The game is such a blast though. I'd forgotten how much fun stage 5 was. I'd also forgotten how pathetic the stage 4 boss is; I swear, you just LOOK at him funny and he dies at you.

Well, after some pain pills and more attempts, I have remembered one of the (big) reasons why I stopped playing this and hadnt touched it for three years:

The first stage is the single most boring area in any shmup I have ever played.

Being that I"m using the blue ship, this is the fire stage. I realized the problem when I started to nod off partway through. I have *NEVER* done that before in any game ever. I mean, we're talking beyond-Arrow-Flash level boring.

That and I usually just dont care about the scoring in this one too much. Most of my enjoyment is the game mechanics, the shield system, and (other than Stage Boring) the level design. And the awesome boss fights (again, other than Stage Boring, since that's the Screaming Nightmare Hell Boat). The fact that I've already beaten this (and thus, there's nothing to improve on) isnt helping.

This just went from "I'll definitely submit a score" to "I'll maybe submit one possibly if I feel like it and only on a night where I've had alot of caffiene".

Though my high opinion of the game does not change: It's excellent, just not from a "play for score" perspective. And again, Stage Boring.

I find all the points come in stage 4 and 5 for me.

The only 'stick I have is a Kempston Competition Pro 5000 (owned since '86!). Unfortunately, as it does not have a 2nd fire button (it does have two but they both do the same thing - left- or right-handed) thereby requiring me to use a key on the 'board, This is not a workable scenario, notwithstanding the fact that I do not have a USB adaptor for my Kempston. And it has been that way all my gaming left where two or more fire buttons are required, hence my use of a 'board for all games ('board being far more intuitive for platformers and other such). I just run the risk of breakage with bullet-hells. And no chance of a USB at the moment, or an X-Arcade stick or some such (definately NOT a thumb stick or d-pad - I struggle with those on my PS2 and SNES) as I have an expensive house move on the horizon and, for once, absolutely no available funds for anything beyond living essentials. Maybe one day I will get around to upgrading my control method. Maybe.

At least it's small.

I've got X-Arcade's Tankstick, which....... is not small. Lol. Kinda makes it difficult to use. Let alone move.

Barely breaking 100mill by the end of Stage 1, yet manage to up that to 500bill before reaching end of Stage 2. I'm sure I'm missing something on Stage 1 for such a 'low' score by comparison. Will keep plugging away, though. :D Dumbest of dumb deaths finished me off with this go - I KNOW what to expect and this level and I KNOW how to deal with it - soooooooo annoyed, timing my medal point run a fraction off. BAH HUMBUG! We defo make Stage 3 if I give myself that bit of patience or sod the point-scoring.

Yeah! Don't know how I slotted my way past the two rail-roading onslaughts, but there was waaaaaaay too much going on for my first time on L3 by the point I finally died. Strewth! Great fun, though. :D Finally making inroads on L1 scores - just over 200bill, though this is still well off the pace I've witnessed on YTube.

There is an extend in stage 4. Not hard to figure out how to make it appear.

However, it can only be gotten if you've already lost 2 lives before that point. Which, yes, is bloody stupid, but that's how it goes.

That's exactly what I meant. Useless extend = no extend at all. :)

Quiet on the submission front so far. Good to see you making progress Sputryk. If you can get stage 3 done, the points will really up from there on in.

Edit: Here's my latest. A weekend of low scoring runs and then this one. If I can make it to Stage 5 without dying the points just rack up.. still pretty poor at scoring.. earnt 9 trillion just from Stage 6.. stage 7 is ridiculous.. i lasted all of a few seconds.. Not sure i'll get back there anytime soon.. had a stockpile of bombs that i saved for the stage 6 boss so was pretty much useless. Guess i'll try and work on my scoring in the early stages.. I think i'll struggle to 1CC this in the time we have.

Have recorded a replay of this, though I'm not too happy with how the run went.
First 2 stages were great, then got too nervous as my multiplier was so high, x3.7 million on the first stage.

Hmm, nice one.

I dont think I've ever gone beyond about 12 persquillion (12 being the red number) even with a 1LC.

Never, ever understood what in the hell I'm supposed to do to get scores that dont blow. The game's ultra-simple mechanics dont help. It's like, ok, I'm reflecting and grabbing tons and tons and tons and tons of medals, and..... it doesnt help whatsoever. Is why I gave up playing this one for score LONG ago. Simply doesnt make much sense. This one really is only much fun as a survival game, at least in my case.

As it is, no submission this time indeed, I'm already tired of trying to score well in this one (after all of three or four attempts), so I went back to Under Defeat.
