Not quite to the degree of Gradius, though.

I'm fine with many shmups from that era (R-Type is probably my favorite series from that time), and things like checkpoints dont really bother me. Gradius and it's brethren though, never sat right with me, at all.

Though, I'm really not a fan of Konami in general either, beyond Castlevania.

Lessee.... as older shmups go, and as horis go:

There's the R-type series, though I'm not too sure on Leo, havent had much time with that and it doesnt quite play like the others.... the Darius series, Fantasy Zone, Blazing Star, Prehistoric Isle, Xexex, and some older ones like Scramble/Super Cobra, Defender/Stargate, and so on....

As verts go,

Xevious, Armed Formation, the Star Soldier series, 1942 series, Omega Fighter, Viper Phase 1, Raiden series, Alpha Mission 1 & 2....

And many of the "space invader" types, like Galaxian, Galaga, Gaplus, Gorf, Phoenix..... quite alot of these, actually. And some of the funkier ones like Sinistar or Bosconian.

There's others, but I kinda blank out after listing that many.

AmidstStorm - AMS - 174,900 - 1-4 - Saturn - On

This is my "achievement" from 3 and a half hrs of solid play this morning. Really struggling.

The only words to come out of my mouth have been "arggghh!" "f#ck" & "f#cking c#nt!"

I'll submit a pic at a later date.

Rankings updated.

Yeah, I know how you feel, lol. Usually when I'm playing one of these, every word is an f-bomb. Sometimes I'll get creative with them, the angrier I get. For example, "seven f#cks and a duck!!!" is one I'll shriek at the screen every now and then. No, I dont know where I got that.

If we had to go with another Konami shmup for whatever reason, I woulda much rather done the Salamander games; they're a bit.... strange, with the switching between hori and vert, but they also use a different powerup system. One thing that always bothered me about Gradius, was the situation where you'd get like 5 orange enemies that'd all die in a little heap, and leave this blob of powerups behind; I'd go to grab exactly ONE, to get what I wanted, and manage to get THREE instead, something like that.

Or we coulda done Mega Zone. It's an old vert from them; it's unforgiving, but actually a pretty good game. Might be worth checking out.

I may end up giving it a go after all, as it's been AWHILE since I've played these, and my view of it may be different this time around. It's also not bloody Parodius, so it's at the very least got that going for it.

EDIT: And then I got to stage 2, and was very bluntly reminded of MANY reasons why I hated this series so much. Whoever thought up the bit at the end should be A: fired, B: never allowed to work in the industry again, C: kicked by a horse, D: kicked by a second horse, and E: banished to some remote island. Oh, and F: kicked by some more horses.

One of the most broken scenes in any shmup, that bit. And I seem to remember that the damn game pulls broken stupid crap at the end of EVERY STAGE. The volcanoes in stage 1 arent much better. And other games in the series pull plenty of that crap as well.

Yeah, I was right the first time: bad game. No submission.

Oh well. I at least gave the horrid thing a chance.

You crack me up, guys
It's amazing how much of a turmoil there can be over such an OLD game as Gradius.

I will be playing the PS1 version tonight, if time allows it.

 the only reason I'm sticking with this, what seems like torture for me, is because, a) im top of the league :)
B) it deserves respect for what it did for the genre.
c) I like shooting things.

AmidstStorm - AMS - 327,500 - 1-7 - Saturn - On (pic at later date)

Goddamn stage 3 head people. Other than those and stupidly crashing into things because of an over-sensitive movement using the Saturn pad, I've got this sussed til stage 7. Fully optioned up with a laser and missiles is recipe for success. One death? may as well restart.

Really not a fan of checkpoints, especially when they appear to be acting as a punishment for death. Still, having fun with the game overall. And yep, those Maoi heads can p!ss right off, frankly. Putting in a few more credits later tonight.

Ok guys to make things a little more easy for everyone I feel, im changing a little rule slightly for submitting scores. A screenshot is no longer needed every time you submit a score. I will still input your score into the rankings table on page 1 but come end of game time, you must have posted a pic of your highest score to be valid. If you miss the deadline, the score will be erased!

It's entirely up to you guys how you submit, if you want to stick to the original way then thats cool. Personally I've realised since I'm without Internet and can't easily upload my photos, that it's best I just submit my scores without a photo and then I'll post my high score pic towards the end of game time or when I get a new connection. May even have to email the pic via phone to someone here to upload for me...

Got to 2-1 on my first life, almost beat the boss and then couldn't even back back to the volcanoes.
Second loop is hard...

I found it amazing that any of you can stick with this one.

I also find it amazing that I ever went and beat this, years back. Or bloody Gradius V, which I hate more. Wherever that magical level of extreme tolerance came from, I have since lost it.

Hell, even that damn boat in Ketsui isnt THIS annoying. Though it's fairly close.
