The One (magazine) used to review demos - I wonder if once every couple of months we could just have a page dedicated to some of the old demos.

If it falls on its arse and loads of people give it a thumbs down, it could be pulled.

didn't Edge magazine also doid something like this in the mid nineties, but then again this was probably seen as digital art section they used to do..i reckon a timeline feature stemming off into what they did for the gaming world.

To my mind, the problem with magazines covering demos is... well, most of the time the person writing the piece doesn't really understand what they're actually looking at; demos from the 8- and 16-bit eras in particular can probably only truly be appreciated if the viewer has a little coding experience under their belt, because knowing where a machine's boundaries are helps when looking at routines that appear to and occasionally do step over them.

Much as I liked the demos at the time, they were still only good for one or two brief viewings, even for someone with a technical interest like me.

Trying to raise interest by explaining the apparent graphical achievements retrospectively is going to be a waste of time, particularly since a lot of the time those achievements were being faked in some way, and have long been surpassed by current technology such that they don't impress anyone any more.

Yeah, you're more than likely right - keep it in this thread then I guess.

Anyone remember Mental Hangover from Scoopex?!

What about that Red Sector (not Scoopex no...) megademo then? First of its kind, wasn't it? Eddie rockin away as the loader was cool.

If memory serves it was either the first trackmo or close to being it, yeah. These things get a little vague sometimes, usually the "rule" is that it's the first to release something gets the kudos and names the technique, but that doesn't always happen if a later example is better spread.

Eddie in the loader was the Red Sector Megademo.

Y'see, i'd disagree strongly there because it was less entertaining than the vectors and bobs around at the same time for me...

What I ment was, it was a break from the vectors and bobs doing the strip at the time..although the shaded bobs in Silents hardwired demo where simply amazing and the vector graphics in Alcatraz's Odyssey where divine.. So most of he time for me was vectors, bobs :)

I've just re-discovered LSD's The Long Dark Teatime of The Soul.

Couldn't believe I forgot about it.
