That was Robocop 2. I haven't seen it in ages, but remember it being a thoroughly unpleasant film that completely missed what made the original so effective. Verhoven was always good at making films that seemed dumb and shallow but were actually very clever (Starship Troopers being another good example).

I'm surprised the Robocop is only currently rated 7.5 on IMDB, since you barely ever hear a bad word against it. Inspired by this thread, I did watch it again a few days ago, and it's still as great as ever. Murphy's death is still shocking, and almost unbearable in the Director's Cut as you watch a decent family man getting literally blown to pieces

Aye, Verhoeven does like his ultra-violence. On the director's commentary on the Total Recall DVD someone mentions the original cut of it got an X rating. I would love to see that cut!

Wasn't Terminator produced with a very small budget? I'm sure Robocop's budget was much higher, but to pick between them is rather tough. Both have far fetched storyline's, but their both still awesome. Perhaps if I had to choose, I would go with The Terminator, just because it's got Arnie in it lol.

Tough call on that one. But I think I'd have to go with Robocop. It's possibly THE quintessential 80's ultraviolence movie. Its got everything, an evil and corrupt corporation, a cyborg police man with a machine pistol, great cultural satire, shotgun dismemberment, giant robots, blood n guts, explosions, drugs, car chases, more explosions, bug f*!k-off guns, a guy gets shot in the testicles, great villains in the form of Ronny Cox and Kurtwood Smith, the line "Bitches Leave", and of course a guy getting crashing into a vat of toxic waste, melting and then getting splattered by a speeding car.

Terminator is great too of course, It has a near indestructible Killer robot from the future that kills everything in its path, some good set pieces etc. Much darker and more serious I suppose. Must watch it again soon.

Robocop is a really great film but for me, The Terminator is pure quality.

The music to The Terminator is just awesome too - wow - when i think of it, i just want to put it on and watch it again. Oh and the fact that the story is built around a combination of virtually indestructable machines and time travelling is a winning combination that has the 80s stamped all over it.

Bring on The Terrminator 5!
"Conan, what is best in life?"

"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women."

Agreed! Although I didn't think Salvation was anywhere near as good as T1/T2

A toughie, but Robocop wins it for me. Clarence Boddicker has to be one of the best villains of all time. His one liners are brilliant too.

Plus he did the ultimate Villan gag by begging for his life as a distraction. All he had to do after that was twig his moustache and that would have selaed the deal.

Oh wow that's funny. Why would they do a boob shot in the first place? it makes no sense to have one unless it's part of the plot...
