When did you get Sky?

Postby thebear on Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:13 pm

The channel when it was just a single channel started in 85, I'm sure i discovered it while tuning a cable connected tv in mid-late 86

(no later as it coincided with starting secondary school, remmeber lots of kids not believeing me that there was another channel if they looked, then them either loving me if they had cable, or calling me a liar if had an ariel!)

The full satellite available to everyone launch was 89

Something I just remembered, we used to call cable pipeline then, was that general thing or just where I lived

1995, via Cambridge Cable (which merged with NTL which merged into Virgin).

Got Sky via satellite for the last five years via dish here.

In Ireland the TV provider Cablelink (later bought out by NTL) added Sky and Super Channel to their service on the 30th January 1987. I recall this as it was the day Super Channel was launched. Before that we just had BBC1, BBC2, Channel 4, UTV/ITV and the two rather pathetic Irish Channels RTÉ 1 and RTÉ 2.

The Boxes/Dishes were only made available a few years later I recall. It never really took of here though. I can only recall one family in school who had it.

I'm not sure I've ever had it.

It might have been on the cable box Mrs Ant had for a bit but I don't recall. Its not something I've chased nor something I need now I have broadband.

We've had Sky intermittently over the years, first time was about 1991 I think.
Memories - The DJ Kat Show, weird 80s US sitcoms, cheesy German TV, MTV playing "Now That We Found Love" by Heavy D and the Boyz on seemingly a constant loop, every channel having a strange over-saturated look...

Never, since my parents refused to have an ugly dish on the side of the house. I've never taken it out myself as I don't want that much tv and it's simply too expensive. Or I could visit my parent,s who duly decided to have a dish installed a few months after I moved out

BSB "5-channel TV"

Remember that? with the squaerial?

We got that, must've been '89. Sky bought it in the early 90's...we got rid. Too many repeats.

I'm completely disinterested in Sky/cable, freeview is plenty and now I'm dabbling with Netflix I'm pretty much sorted.

Sky circa 1992 when it wasn't full of make over programmes and endless repeats. - Just more foreign channels. MTV was good liked watching MTV greatest hits with its VJ's something sadly missing these days. The movie channel was interesting because they would be on TV way ahead of terrestial telly. Sky 1 on channel 8 was great as it had The Simpsons, 21 Jump Street, Beverly Hills 90210 and the X Files.

Never had it - we didn't even get a remote control until 2000!

My nan had cable at one point though, and she'd leave a tape in and record six hours worth of Nickelodeon for us (on long-play).

Got Sky back in 1991. I'm a big fan of american footy and they were showing this new league on Sky (WLAF - The one which had the London Monarchs) so it was great watching the games live on that.

Also MTV with Ray Cokes, before MTV became a weird reality tv channel. Weird having just Sky Sports back then, finally another Sky Sports channel came along. Also watching the Simpsons (when it was good !) on a sunday evening, my mates used to come round to watch that.

Do like Sky but they have kept bumping the price up and up over the years. But its been great getting all these channels (granted a lot of crap ones) when for years we just had 4 channels and that was that.

Liam - Totally agree with you, remember that Heavy D and the Boyz song ! Used to watch Yo! MTV Raps, think it was on a friday at 6pm ? Had some classic rap groups on it back then. Whenever i hear REM - Losing my religion that takes me back to the early 90's. Have to find some of my old VHS tapes as i used to love leaving it on the music channels and taping my favourite songs on it back then

Never had Sky.

Got NTL/Virgin in the late 1990s, and have been more than happy with that!

I lot of my friends did have Sky, but I personally preferred Virgin and still do to this day!

Not having Sky does mean I miss out on channels such as Sky Atlantic, but for that we have this marvellous new fangled thing called The Internet!

My parents got it for my brother and I in August 1997. I still remember the episode of WWF Raw from that week - the original DX formed! - and the first thing I watched: a two-hour long marathon of Goosebumps on Fox Kids. 8)
