classic kid's programs from the late 70's and early 80's

These were the best kids programs about. Better than the chuff they show now (look what I'm doing kids! A drive by!!!)

One i remember watching (and still have on an old Beta max tape) is Gideon, a swan who has three friends: a rabbit, a dog and a mole. They had quite surreal adventures. One being they were all walking backwards, and ended up upside down.

Another one i remember, not the name though, was this funny black and white bird thing that could split into up to a thousand of himself (?) and always had to rescue people. Thats all I know.

Anyone remember these or any others from the era?

I vaguely remember Gideon! :D

I also used to like a kid's TV series on BBC1, it was dubbed (I think it was German) and was called 'The Legend Of Tim Tyler', which was about some kid being persued by an evil crime syndicate who were trying to get his smile off him  It was actually quite creepy.

Then there was 'Chocky', which was like a weird glowing alien thing which used to scare me a bit :(

Also....Benji, Zaks and the Alien Prince! :) Anyone remember that?

Most kids that watched Dogtanion loved it, as well as Willy Fog and Cities of Gold.

Excellent cartoon, watched a few of the episodes a few weeks back, like alot of 80's cartoons not really aged well, but when I bought the DVD for a £1 from poundland you cant complain.

I was growing up in the 80's so Im more towards the cartoon side of things, pole position, Ulysesse 31, centurions, mysterious city of gold and my all time favourite Jayce and the wheeled warriors (basically starwars rip off with cool mobile cars/tanks).

I remember one live action kids show about a young lad who had a t-shirt with a picture of a tiger on the back, when he was in trouble it would glow and he would be given super strentgh or superspeed to save the day with!?!? anyone?? I remember one scene where he is pushing his friend on a bike super fast while being chased by by men in a car....very strange lol

One of my favourite lesser-known shows from the 70's is this:

You've mentioned some excellent shows there. Jayce And The Wheeled Warriors, Pole Position, Centurions (which you can get the complete series of now!), Mysterious Cities Of Gold and Ulysses 31.
Managed to complete my Ulysses 31 collection ages ago and the show is still as good as it was back then.

awesome times

Was Speed Racer ever shown in the UK? I gather from reviews of the movie that its based on a US cartoon, but I've never heard of it until now.

I think it was on satellite tv at some point. The theme music was pants, though

Never had satellite tv. Briefly had cable a few years ago, just before our local cable co went bust.

Speed Racer cartoon on DVD? I'd like to see the original before watching the movie.

I'm sure Speed Racer was shown during one of the Saturday morning kids shows at one point, I remember watching it. It may well have been on Sky though.

Sky One used to show some cartoons from the 60s and 70s during the early 90s, & I am also convinced that they also aired Speed Racer.
There was a manga cartoon which I saw during the late 80s that was based in a spaceship. It wasn't as action based as the other manga type cartoons & was more of a drama in a way. I have done a search but haven't been able to find it, as there are other manga cartoons based in space no surprises there. Does anyone know which cartoon it is?

Not a particularly great programme but regularly watched because it was the first thing on TV just as I came in from school was The Red Hand Gang - notable only for starring James Bond III and having an infuriating "la la la la la" theme tune...
