I must confess to a little envy there, I've never yet seen a steam train running, only a couple of static ones in transport museums.

Its number is clearly visible in your pics, so its very easy to find lots of info on that particular train, 'The Duchess of Sutherland':

Yeah I did look it up afterwards. Great history. There are quite a few trips that come down here so I think I will be taking more pics in the future. Got a couple of good ones on its return journey as well.

Some of the trips come from Scotland, maybe you could find some local to you. What area are you in?

Megamixer wrote:I've been on a fair few steam trains on various holidays in the country. The last one was at Minehead but I've also been on the Paignton and Dartmouth steam railway which is a short trip but a nice relaxing experience. I think it's great how people preserve the old steam engines and keep them running but then there are places like the graveyard on Barry Island which is full of steam engine wrecks that have been scrapped for years. I'm assuming that place is still there anyway.

I've been on the Paignton one as well and a few different ones in Wales. Amazing work enthusiasts do to keep these brilliant engines running. :D

The Tal-y-llyn is worth a ride - lovely journey and some great walks to be had at the end in Nant Gwernol and at Dolgoch Falls. Oh and the ride to Devils Bridge from Aberystwyth is fantastic too.

Hythe to Dungeness mini railway is also a nice day out.

I'm not a train fanatic but the volunteers and enthusiasts running the lines are brilliant and a lot of the time very friendly and happy to answer a few questions etc.

Not been on those ones but will try the Devil's Bridge one when down there sometime. I always thought that would be a good run.

Just been through an excruciating one hour physio session with my physio wife, ankylosing spondylitis is bloody painful but lucky enough to be married to an excellent physio. Wake up at 5:30 every morning to have physio on my back just so I can get through work each day, some people just need to man the fu(k up!

Tipped it down with rain here today and finally suppressed that accursed heatwave. Nice to be at a normal temperature again :)

that is indeed fortunate. I have physio on the NHS, I'm always nagging them to give me more sessions but the best they can do is once every two weeks.

Got back from Summer Camp today (SwordCamp, essentially). Everything hurts, but I've come on leaps and bounds since I last sparred anyone, plus Loch Lomond is brilliant this time of year.
Also, showers are fantastic when you think about them.

Just spent 3 hours at a Children's Tea Party with a hundred or so parents I have never, and hopefully never again, met.
Surrounded by screaming, snot, vomit and half-chewed food is not my idea of a Bank Holiday well spent.
