I need some information on buying Region 1 Dvd's in the UK

Postby James Bond on Mon Nov 13, 2006 7:07 pm

I want to buy a u.s dvd boxset of the old TV series "Unsolved Mysteries" which was presented by Robert Stack. However I'm fed up with being stung by u.s customs. Do any UK based websites offer u.s dvds? I tried the following:

Ebay
Play
HMV

All I can say is go second hand or eBay.

I've not been unlucky enough to be stung by customs from PlayUSA so far, but I can also recommend just using ebay shop sellers from ebay USA. The vast majority of them ship to the UK.

Also, just to be picky.

It's DVDs, not dvd's.

And playusa's prices include delivery. It was part of the main play.com site until about 2 years ago.
The average game player is 33 years old.
The average age of the most frequent game buyer is 38 years old. 92 percent of computer game buyers and 80 percent of console game buyers are over the age of 18

They sometimes pop up a warning on the more expensive items stating you MAY be charged import costs-but I never have

If it's a cjopice between play and ebay , it has to be play every time
(regardless of cost)

Yeah I use playusa and you can get charged. Though in my experience it hasn't happened much.

Playusa was much better when it was all a direct section of play, could go back and forth and your basket would be the same, gets awkward if you have something in the basket but want to check the price on the other site. Or if you want something on both but also want to keep shopping. Still great value though.

PlayUSA sources stuff from the US and that's where it is sent from. So if you are over the Customs limit (£18) you may get stung.

www.movietyme.com ship from within the UK, so you won't get stung by customs. (Obviously, their prices are slightly higher because of this.) CD WOW ships from Hong Kong, but customs duty has already been paid by the company. So, there are two possibilities.

I've used movietyme a few times, it's really good for getting Asian stuff before it's released here. Battle Royale 2 was one, got House of Flying Daggers before the cinema here even had it. Seems to take a bit longer to arrive though and overall there's just something about them I don't like or trust.

Are you getting stung by US Customs or HM Customs?

I've been hit by UK Customs & Excise a bunch of times, hence why discovering MovieTyme may well be a good thing. I'm not sure why Elgin doesn't trust them—I've ordered a bunch of stuff from them, and they're certainly no slower than Play.
