Buying a Tablet, what to buy?

Postby MattyC64c on Thu Mar 22, 2012 5:49 pm

I'm now very interested in a tablet computer. I've been gunning towards an ipad 3, but seeing I can get an ipad 2 for about £80 cheaper, that sounds like a tempting offer too. There there are of course the andriod tablets. Web browsing on these seems slightly better on these machines thanks to flash capability, but the amount of apps available is, is somewhat limited.

Also I've seen many complaints on the Android marketplace about games and apps that work on some devices, but not on others. The iPads don't seem to have as much issues.

Also, I already own an iPod touch, so many paid apps will be available again free of charge, including quite a few games. Taking that into account, the iPad seems like a no brainer, but which one?

I also read this morning that some iPad 3 users are having problems with their new devices. They are becoming very warm while playing games or watching HD films.

Interesting look at iPad 3, by owner of said device, who started out with iPad, then moved onto iPad 2, now moved onto iPad 3.....

Looks like all that power:Gone on display, currently yet to be used to any great degree and has resulted in a heavier machine.

I've got an ipad 2 which i love, i dont see a huge need to upgrade to the ipad 3. If you can get the ipad 2 cheaper i would go for that, also use some of that extra money towards an iCade which i'm sure you'll love !

The ipads great for a lot of apps, obviously reading books/graphic novels is excellent on it, the iCade was the turning point for me to get one. Love it

Yeah a few games look better on the ipad 3 but to me its not a huge upgrade.

iPad is the way to go, no android tablet yet manages to beat it.

tbh either generation of iPad will be great, just depends on how much money you have to spare on it

I got an iPad 2 last November despite knowing that the iPad 3 would be released in the spring. Yes the new screen looks good but I don't regret getting the iPad 2 at all. I've read about the heat issue too but I thought of more interest was that the new apps taking advantage of the new specs require more space. Tech radar recommend getting the 64gb model because of this. eBay usually do store offers regularly, I got 10% off mine from zavvi and with apple discontinuing the iPad 2 32/64gb models you should be able to get a bargin over the next few weeks/months

I think I may go for an iPad 2 then, and keep the extra cash. Gaming isn't a major priority, and even then, most iOS games I buy are pretty basic. There are already hundreds of apps already made for the iPad 1 and 2 that will suit my needs. Plus I can use some of the money saved to purchase more apps!

As I can see by that link provided, most current apps look a bit poor on the new machine as they haven't been updated to the new resolution yet.

As I see it, by the time more advanced apps become available to take advantage of the screen, the iPad 4 will be out!

General thinking on new iPad appears to be:IF your going from original iPad to iPad 3, you'll notice great improvement, if your going from iPad 2-iPad 3, you might be left thinking..is that it?.

The new screen clearly seen as the killer feature for it, but comes at a price it seems.

You can get a refurbished iPad 2 from Apple for £289. I think you'll struggle to find a better tablet at that price regardless of OS/manufacturer. If you do get an iPad 2 though, under no circumstances look at the new iPad's screen. Follow this one simple rule and you will never regret your purchase. ;)

Good man.Never thought i'd ever buy an Apple product, but now, as iPad 2 owner, best piece of kit i've bought in an age, you just have to accept that a 'better' model just round the corner.

If you have an iPad you have to also get the icade....

A lot of games work on it. The Speccy app one of the best. The icade works very well. Can pick them up fr about 50-60 quid

Does the controller work on the iCade too? Coz if it does, that's pretty awesome!

Well I've got my iPad 2 and I'm still playing with it. It's great! I just played Real Racing 2 HD and I'm quite literally blown away by the graphics. Also Magazines such as Retro Gamer look great. I think I may cancel my magazine subscription when it runs out, and go turn digital.

What other games and apps do you suggest?

I'd get a Thinkpad X61 Tablet, but I don't think that's what you're after.
