As a former Mod (and admin) of several World of Warcraft community sites I can tell you that 95% of all Modding happens behind the scenes.
I'm not sure how it is now, but for me the first 20 minutes of every half hour session was always deleting spam threads so nobody ever got to see them. From the outside looking in it appeared that we weren't doing anything at all, but that certainly wasn't the case. No siree bob. In fact we had a spate of spambots posting porno picture links everywhere, but rarely did any forum user ever get to see them. We were that good.
Some of us would get up at 5 or 6am to mod a site for free, just because they wanted to help the community they were a part of. For free. They certainly never lorded it over anyone. Neither did they use their powers for their own agendas.
Just saying. It's a hard-knock life being a Mod. There's no glory involved, just dedication. We shouldn't piss on that.
