Does anybody in here..fix TV's?

Postby IronMaidenRule on Tue Aug 07, 2012 8:20 pm

Just seeing if anybody on here has the appropriate knowledge to help me?

I have a SAMSUNG LE26A456C2D TV , which I use for gaming and as a PC display, it has a small issue where, you turn the TV socket on, a red light appears to indicate the TV has power, I press the on button on the remote, the light blinks like the TV is booting.....then nothing happens, the red light either goes solid, or fades to black. But,eventually the TV will turn on and off a few times after a few mins, then stabilize to a working state.

In the past, I have taken the back off, disconnected everything from the power board, reconnect it all and then it works as normal for a few weeks, then deteriorates again, but it is getting worse.

I can buy a replacement control board and power board, which is it most likely to be and what is the difference between the two boards. :?:

I'm not much help I'm afraid but you could always take it to a repair centre if your willing to pay, they will more than likely be able to get hold of the parts and install them correctly. Of course it might be that it ends up being a little pricey so might not be worth it.

That did cross my mind until I took the back off the TV, and for somebody who works with computers like me I was really unimpressed with the technology in modern sets, there was essentially a large TFT screen, an input board, a power board, a control board and clip in wires connecting it all, absolutely no soldering on the wires at all. My main problem was deciding on which board I should replace, gone with the Control Board though, only £20 and I have a feeling that as the TV is getting power and starting to boot up, it can't really be the power board, but the Control Board the directs the power to the TFT screen.

You're starting to sound like a mechanic now... car not running?.. not sure what part to change?... start with the cheapest and work your way up... eventually it'll run

Considering it's a Samsung my bet is that you need to recap one of the boards. Samsung seem incapable of making quality displays for whatever reason. :(

 , so that is how they go about things at car garages then. The trade secret to my job is Google, if it is a common fault you can find the answer online, if not, then you might have to start thinking a bit.

Balls!! I will go with my cope out of swapping boards but looking into that if the fault persists, determined not to throw this TV away for a new one, already rescued it once from the tip.

What ever you do, if you're taking the back of one of these TVs, be careful. It may not be a CRT, but there are parts in there that will pack a wallop and could easily lead to a small, sad, family gathering a week later.

Holding the power button while the screen is unplugged goes some way of discharging.

I know exactly what the problem is.

My Samsung 46" when switched on would click on first power led and click off. It repeated this for about 3 minutes then eventually came on properly.

The problem is a blown capacitor on the power board.

I bought a new capacitor from Maplins for 30p and fixed it myself. Been perfect since....

There are loads of sites and videos about this on the net.

Look for the bulging capacitor(s)

Samsung will send out an engineer to fix it as it is a common fault with their TVs. Worth ringing them.

 , Cheers RetroRik, I will take a look at that in the next few days when I can get the back off the TV again. If it involves soldering, I will give Samsung a call if I see the bulging capacitors, it is not my strongest skill.

Caps aren't too difficult to do, but if they'll get a guy out for no cost then why not?

This was a problem with my old Samsung 204B, a very common one.

I was going to say, having worked for Martin Dawes previously, the power light behaviour indicates a power supply problem, and it's usually the board. Some of the 2006/2007 Panasonic LCDs developed a similar problem where the TV's startup would take multiple attempts. Luckily they tend to do it automatically, but obviously can be a sign of further hardware failure down the line as one minor fault can cause other minor/major faults elsewhere in the TV.

If it's just bulging capacitors, happy days, hopefully you got onto it in time and solve the problem before others arise. But I'd try not to use your TV too much until you do, just in cases.

Some good and bad news, good news is, I took the back off today and could not see any bulging or blown capacitors on the powerboard, bad news, I got bloody sent the wrong part  , but whilst the back was off the TV, I disconnected everything from the powerboard, left it for 5 mins, plugged it all back in and the set is working fine for the time being, turns off and on every time at first button press.

Problem is a bulging capacitor isn't always the case for a blown one.

There could be a failed capacitor that looks normal. :?

So on the second button press it comes on normally.? It just switches off after the first press.?

Nads,

I turn on the power at the wall, red power light comes on. Press power button, red light flashes to indicate it is booting up, then it either goes solid red and nothing appears on the screen or the light goes out and nothing is displayed on the screen, the screen just remains pure black, no image/backlight etc. However, after anywhere to 1-5mins, the TV will make its powering on "tune" and the screen will come to life, sometimes it will keep alternating between off and on states, but it will stabilize and be usable for the rest of the day. And, like I said above, when I disconnect everything from the powerboard, it works fine without any issues for about two weeks or so.
