Retro Gamer IRC Chat Room (Regular meet Sundays 9PM)

Postby SirClive on Wed Mar 26, 2008 7:25 am

To make it easier for people to find the instructions for getting connected to the chat room I have copied the important info over from the old thread...

Sureshot wrote:Alright, time to flog this horse again!

Would be nice to see some more people dropping in and having a natter.

I'll even repeat the steps to get in there:

1/ Download mIRC (or use a Java IRC client - please look back through this thread for more info on those)
2/ Install, open, give yourself a nickname and put something random in 'real name' - whatever you want really.
3/ Select Quakenet (irc.quakenet.org) from the server list and click connect.
4/ Type /join #retrogamer once you are connected.
5/ Stay in the channel for more than 5 minutes as you may not get an immediate response from people in the channel! If everyone leaves after 2 minutes it's a waste of time.

Hope to see you there!

Edit: I even think Ant's Java guide is still relevant if you don't want to use mIRC, although generally Java clients are a pain because Quakenet doesn't like multiple connections from the same place, so you can get kicked off and suspended for a period of time (from that particular Java client host).

Antiriad2097 wrote:Right click a blank space on your desktop. On the pop up menu, choose 'New', then 'Shortcut'.

This should open a window asking you to 'Type the location of the item'. In the empty white box, type (or copy and paste) this:

http://pjirc.viper007bond.com/index.php ... akenet.org

Change 'MYNAME' above so its your desired username.

Click Next. Type in a name for your new shortcut e.g. RG IRC

Click Finish. We're done.

You should now have a shortcut on your desktop that will take you to a completed login screen for the chat room - just click Login and you should be joining us seconds later.

Note that its normal to have a request to run/install the Java client when you login - its quite safe to accept this one.

Here is some more words of wisdom from Sureshot;

A link to the old thread is here...

But if you have any questions then Sureshot is the hostess with the mostess, so I am sure he will answer any questions you have.

There were plenty of people online last night, so if (like me) you thought the chat room was still just 3 people talking once every 20 minutes, then you would be wrong.

Even Darran was on there!

Oh, i just sit there and talk to myself so there's usually something being said... just not always fit for family viewing or in English depending on what else i'm doing...

As above, the following requires no installation, it runs in Internet Explorer (or your browser of choice).
