Whither Intellivision?

Postby GFWorkman on Mon Mar 03, 2008 7:57 pm

Did Intellivision not make it across to the UK? I've not seen any particular coverage in Retro Gamer so far.

I think a special on the Intellivision would not only be of interest to your subscribing cousins in America, but also be educational for any who may have missed it the first time around. It's a fun system and easy to pick up on eBay. Although obviously you'd have to deal with NTSC and 120V issues, that shouldn't be too hard for a true retro gamer, right? ;)

It was about, although nowhere near as successful as the 2600 or the 8 bit home micros that dominated the scene here in the early to mid 80's. It was certainly a lot more common than the Colecovision.

I remember a friend of mine had an Intellivision and had a combat type game (armour battle?), I remember being astounded that the graphics were so much better than my 2600 and it had decent sound and......trees!!.

Yep they sure did, I still have the one I picked up in my local WH Smiths when they were selling them off cheap, the games were all 50p each.

My Console is a little worse for wear nowadays:

But still in regular use :D

Ok - great! Then let's see some RG Intellivision coverage!

Space Battle - the great uncredited Galactica game (they didn't secure the rights). I still play this one on occasion...

Astrosmash - the game you can play forever. (difficulty scales down as you screw up)

Racing - the first game where I had more fun playing it in a way other than the developers intended (1. why outrun your opponent when you can just run him off the road? 2. why stay on the course when you can drive off through the trees - and discover that the "world" repeats...)

Ah, the frustratingly difficult buttons to push, the difficult to control wheel - truly classic stuff! :)

Intellivision and Colecovision were both readily available in the U.K.

I had both - and would certainly like to see a retrospective on both.

While the intellivision was capable of a greater degree of graphical detail than the 2600 - I cant help but feel that the speed and colour pallette of the 2600 somehow made the games more playable:- with the possible exception of Shark Shark!

The Colecovision was a step up again from the intellivision-but still seemed to suffer from the same playability problems that the Intellivision did - take the graphical tour de force that was Zaxxon:- looked great in the screen shots - but in reality moved like big Jerk Mcjerky winner of last years MR Jerky competition.

Well - I certainly got mine "across the border" - yes it was a good year, first electricity arrived, then the wheel, then my Colecovision! :)
