Darran and i have talked about expanding the homebrew section by a couple of pages, but neither of us were entirely sure it would be popular.

Well, it gets my vote. There are a few of us out there writing new games for old machines ;) The homebrew section is well worth anyone's time reading, i think. Who wouldn't want to know about new software or games being developed for the old machine they loved?

A very excellent looking front cover! :D Could all Retro Gamer Magazine Front Covers look like this from now on please?

Many Thanks.

I can't wait to read this issue because of the Front Cover. This really does look like a Proper Retro Gaming Magazine now. Well Done! :D

I'd probably prefer not. I like Jason's writing (and programming), but I am more interested in old games for old systems. I have RGCD for new games on old systems.

I think RG should cover both, as well as continuing to cover old games for new systems (remakes old-style games for PS3, DS 360 and PC etc...)

Old games for old systems is obviously the core part of retro gaming for most people, but is by no means the only part!

I'm definitely interested in both new-for-old and old-for-new. Surely I can't be the only one!

Me too, my point was that the current page count for homebrew is pretty much spot on for me.

I would welcome more too. When Jason's Homebrew round-up first appeared three months ago I thought it would just be a one-off and that the Homebrew section would still contain mostly PC remakes, with just the odd round-up of 8-bit every few months or so. I'm glad that it's become a regular feature - long may it continue!

There seems to be a steady growth in homebrew thanks to (semi-?)professional companies - Protovision and Cronosoft have been around for ages now and there's CEZ too, who are marketing cartridges of some of their MSX titles, in addition to tapes for the CPC and Speccy. There are a fair few Atari 2600 cartridges available on Atari Age. Regular competitions such as MSX Dev and ABBUC seem to be motivating at least half a dozen titles of great quality for MSX and Atari 8-bit every year, not to mention a few other valiant efforts.

RGCD is fantastic, of course, but RG is bound to give Homebrew a broader audience, and homebrew gaming does seem to be going through a purple patch at the moment.

So what's up for review next month? splATTR perhaps? BombJack Atari?

Why? I love what is there but don't feel it needs expanding further. Just the same as with the Back to the... features

likewise - I appreciate the time and skill devoted by those who create such games , but tbh they're not what I by RG for. I don't WANT to play new versions of old classics , because lose the nostalgia , and you lose one of the main reasons for playing

I'd like to see more homebrew and remakes reviews in the mag. At the mo' its such a niche thing within an already niche hobby. I'd like to see it grow and RG is potentially the most mainstream public way of raising its profile.

Fair enough Sir Clive - perhaps you are being a little more realistic. I could read page after page of homebrew stuff, and I'm sure many of us on the forum would - but then again we forum users are all at the more committed end of retrogaming. In fact, if RGCD were a newsstand publication I would await its publication with more impatience than RG. (I would buy both, of course).

However, if more pages of homebrew are added to RG, some might even resent homebrew being in there if it's not their sort of thing and they feel that it's taking space away from their favourite features. RG has a lot of bases to cover - to my mind it has to cover the sort of ground that would be better served by about 3 or 4 magazines. Two pages is enough to introduce the unfamiliar to the world of homebrew, without much risk of alienating people who don't like it (even if such people have no taste ). Maybe it could run to three pages rather than just two, but any more than that and maybe you might have people complaining about balance. I wouldn't be one of them, but there you go.

That is pretty much my point, yes. Like you say, 3 pages might be fair enough but I think it is a bit niche for any more than that.
