G'day

I think its probably rather appropriate to put a link to the Register button on the front page.

Took a while to find the forum link too xD

Er, there are two massive links to the registration on the home page – one in the top left, and one huge banner graphic below the information on the latest issue of Retro Gamer.

Can't get clearer than that

Quaid, with a greatest of respect, I must disagree.
You're looking at the RG website with "print" eyes.

Here's what you see:

And here's what MANY long term web users probably "see"...

NOTE- I do not have any "ad block" software.
I've put those boxes there to SIMULATE what I see.

I automatically ignore ads on websites. Many web users do.
It's not even conscious.
AND - I'm not anti-advertising. In fact, I write ads for a living!

In the case of the 2 registration boxes... I seriously have to search around,
and make my eyes look at every part of the page - before I see them.

So - here is my suggestion to you:

Image

It's much less "print visible" than your current ads,
but much.. much more "web user" visible.
Because - it's where you'd expect a "register" link to be.

If you made this design change, I bet your registrations will go UP.

(Sorry about the largish attachments - if they were any smaller you couldn't read my changes.)

He's right you know. Tiny change, but a huge difference.

Yeah, even with the screenshot and instructions I was scouring the page. Making it look like an ad is probably not the best idea.

Heh, now that I think about it, most websites I visit that require a log-in have something like "New users register here, existing users log in here"... never really given it any thought until reading this thread but it does make a significant difference!

I agree that the links on the main RG page do get lost in the "ad noise".

Interesting information and something I've not even considered (everything shows up for me) I'll put it forward Monday.

Daz - regarding "everything shows up for me",
just a quick reminder that we can all "physically see" the registration "ads".

But we don't "actually see" them as we have trained ourselves
NOT to see ads on the net.

So - it's not a technical or ad-blocker thing. It's purely design. :)

By jiminy he's right. Never have actually 'seen' that login button, always mentally blocked it as an ad :0
