Sinclair QL - did it have any games?

Postby Timothy Lumsden on Mon Mar 23, 2009 6:28 pm

Was just pondering at the railway station, Spectrum was very successful with 1000s of games - and yet I cant think of a single game on Sinclair's follow up machine. Did anyone have one? were there any games?

Seems the dongled beast disappreared into the mist of history.....

I remember there was some discussion on an old thread about doing mini retrospections on lesser machines - a shame this idea never went anywhere

Match Point on the QL is still one I would love to play.

I would love a QL Retro Inspection - a system I have still yet to own.

Martyn Carroll did do a feature a while back on the British machines of the early 80s.

It was a good article too - would like to see another one on maybe early pre Atari 2600 consoles etc

The only one I can recall is PSION Chess.

Not really a games machine :D

Sort of. Many elements of Bandersnatch became Brattacas, which was started on QL and then transferred to ST, Amiga and Mac.

I'm guessing that Psion were also strong armed by Sinclair into making some titles - though I can't think of any off the top of my head. I actually toyed with getting a QL when they were flogging them off cheaply after production stopped - glad I didn't.

Naah, there was definitely some arcade stuff available for the QL ... I've got a box of QL games upstairs and in amongst them are:

- Zapper by Eidersoft (vertical shooter)
- Knight Flight by Realtime Software (sounds like a Joust clone according to the blurb)
- HyperDrive by English Software (screenshots look exactly like the BBC version of Pole Position!)
- Match Point by Psion/D & L Research (a Tennis game, obviously)
- 3D Slime by Datalink Systems (going by the screenshots it's a Crystal Castles ripoff)
- Citadel by Eidersoft (Space Shootemup)
- BJ In 3D Land by Eidersoft
- Pointbank Karate by Eidersoft
- Steve Davis Snooker by CDS
- Lands of Havoc by Microdeal (not arcade but I think it's graphical)

... plus a load of text adventures and board game simulations.

Hyperdrive was really impressive at the time. Looked just like arcade Pole Position, a real step up from the Spectrum.
