I actually like the cover, but how come there's no "next time" page, this time?

There is - it says "Burning Rubber" and that's about it. Can't even remember what the other content is next month, but it didn't grab me.

Have to say, this is one of the dullest issues for some time, for me. The Crash thing might be interesting, but other than that I'm not interested. If I weren't a subscriber I would happily skipped the issue.

As for the cover, I have to say that I am a bit sad that it isn't themed; RG I feel is one of the very few mags of *any* genre that can justify having a seasonal cover, and indeed have it tie-in to the theme of the mag. I personally hated Nights, but loved that cover, for example, because it was festive. The actual actual cover? Meh. Using sprites from the games never really does it for me.

RG's the only mag I write for that has such a range of opinions each issue!

As for the 'next time' page, isn't it a big picture of Driver, or did I hallucinate that when flicking through the mag earlier? (Currently in-office, so can't check.)

Got my issue this morning. I'm happy with it, a lot i want to read about bar the SID article, the Crash one is superb, done on the old skool glossy paper , takes me back to the 80's ! It is a shame about the front cover, on the other hand the Afterburner picture should sell a fair few copies. But a shame though as i think many of us were looking forward to an old skool Xmas cover.

Still theres a lot inside for me this month, i know Gabe isnt that interested in it but some months theres tons i want to read, other months not as much but sometimes i'm pleasantly surprised.

The DOS article is great, very very good, tons to read and lots of memories coming back. Looks like proper old skool next month with the ZX80 featured. Shame theres no date the game was released on the Half Life article, bit weird saying NA, wasnt it 97 or 98 ? Cant believe its over 10 years old now. Obviously tiny tiny pick but just wondered why that wasnt shown.

An article on big hyped games at Xmas of the 80's would have been good as again that would have brought back some great Xmas 80's retro memories. Very good issue, still disappointed about the cover though

RG is a strange magazine, for me, in that I've rarely found games in it that I would actually *want* to read about (I'm talking about in-depth features here, rather than a DPS), and yet I do love the mag and read most of it regardless (the only thing I've never read have been the homebrew and reviews sections) because I really buy-in to the nostalgia of it all and I enjoy the 'feel' of it on the whole.

But there have been a number of issues recently (before I subscribed) that I've been happy to miss - the MarioKart and Metroid issues spring to mind. Not being a fan of Nintendo's output (nor the stories behind their games, based on those I've read before) has meant I can gladly skip those issues, and it would be the same for this one too, which is something that is happening a bit more frequently. Maybe I'm just starting to out-grow the mag, I don't know.

Ah, it is Driver, you're right. I think it must have said burning rubber somewhere. Maybe.

I do enjoy seeing the preview page of next months issue but was surprised to see Driver. Again it brings up the whole retro thing, granted its 10 years old but i dont know, perhaps its me not moving along with the times slightly, Half Life to me isnt retro but granted it came out in 97 or 98 so its over 10 years old. But still weird seeing it in the mag. Same for Driver.

Finally some good DOS coverage. Thanks very much :) I'm looking forward to reading it this afternoon when its pooh time. I'll report back with the 'quality' of the article and poohing later today.

The rest of the mag looks great too. Highlights for me include Peter M, Crash and SID (although its hard to get nostalgic without actually hearing the music - maybe a tape on the cover might have been a nice xmas pressie?)

Ta,
Pete

Completely agree. Great game but not really retro yet. Still, if that makes the cut then my Retrobate review of Carmageddon is in with a chance ;) I'd love an article about that game and it should be possible because I believe the devs still exist and are from the Isle of Wight. Hint Hint ;) ;)

Yeah a feature on Carmegeddon would be great, used to love playing that on my old PC many years back before i moved onto GTA

But despite gripes about the cover its true theres a good amount of content this month

JackBurton-Me wrote:I'm sad to say it but we've gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. Last month's was the best cover ever and one of the best issues. I was hugely looking forward to the December edition, expecting a festive tint like last year. Instead this month's issue has appeared to completely ignore the fact that Christmas is coming up. I know it shouldn't but it actually for the moment detracts from any other content in the magazine.

Talk about an own goal. A real pity and an opportunity missed. Probably won't buy it.

All you need is a bit of PVA glue and some glitter and you can spruce it up yourself ;)

The content of the issue in my opinion is excellent. Great going chaps!

Best issue ever , definately , absloutely and without question.
Only flicked through but I want to read EVERY article , and the presentation of the Crash! article is superb
Gonna try my best to refrain from reading it until Christmas Day tea-time as I really want to savour this one.

Great early Christmas present , thanks Darran , Craig and everyone else responsible for this months issue
