I think people are just surprised, because there's been a "Christmassy" cover for the past two years running now.

Having said that, at a time when everyone and his dog's rag has a Christmassy cover, not having one will help the mag to stand out on the shelves this month!

Thing is, while the mag's done this for the past two years, that doesn't necessarily equate to sales (which, frankly, are the most important thing); and if what's been said elsewhere in this thread is true—in that the issue was skipped by some overseas distributors, due to its cover—it would be crazy to repeat that in the current economic climate.

I liked the Oli cover a lot, but it's pretty clear After Burner is a stronger cover for the news stands.

Got to admit this is yet another in a run of very strong issues. Full of diverse subjects and lots of information new to me. Lovely.

*edit* ... and full marks and a gold star to Craig for the SID article.

overall quality content as usual, but this is the first time I have taken issue with some of the content:

1. half life review? not retro

2. PS1 top ten - dominated by yawnful rpgs - this is all wrong. Tomb Raider top? A joke.

3. No xmas content - last December was a wonderful xmassy issue - you all turned into scrooge this year?

Thats it - and I don't mean to sound ungrateful. Good work fellas.

Couldn't there be two covers? One for overseas, and one for here?

SFX magazine does a different cover every month for subscribers, and I think it was Empire who recently had about 20 different covers for the same issue.

It doesn't have to be a totally different cover, just a bit of Christmassyness added to it.

Thank you, sir.

What would you have wanted, bearing in mind that the magazine doesn't duplicate previous commissions? It already covered a whole bunch of Christmas videogames.

Comparisons with Empire and SFX aren't really relevant, given that their readership levels are significantly higher than Retro Gamer's. Additional covers add to the costs. Also, you can bet if Retro Gamer had done this, a whole bunch of people would be moaning about being 'forced' to buy two copies of the same issue to 'complete' their collection.

It's Dreamcast, therefore retro.

jb1014 wrote:2. PS1 top ten - dominated by yawnful rpgs - this is all wrong. Tomb Raider top? A joke.

Two RPGs and one strategy RPG isn't a domination, and as has been already stated, they are not in any real order.

Retro booty was full of xmas gift ideas, what did you expect? Pictures of Mario and Sonic in Santa hats?

blimey, people don't half get precious!

considering how many games there are for the ps1, over rep by rpgs and fps is just lazy and predictable.

xmas comes but once a year - it wouldn't have been too much to ask.

Still a bit astonished and besmirched by the lack of Christmas cover though. Just why?

Why should we do a Christmas cover?

Because it's Christmas Darran, and you have in the past.

We could have had a Christmas cover and people still would have moaned about something. That's the beauty of the magazine. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't  I wouldn't change it for the world though.

Re-reading through this thread though there's a hell of a lot of people who get their opinion's confused with fact. Me included.

I too would have preferred a Christmas cover , but it looks to me that the After Burner cover has been saved for just such a special occasion, and is a real delight to see

I think the cover didnt work for me as I've always associated Sega arcade games with summer - all those bright colours and all - it just seemed almost anti-xmas. but it's a mere trifle - the issue itself is great.

That's one of the main reasons why we went with it.
