Neo Geo Pocket Color memory battery fix idea.

Postby Sisee on Tue Jul 27, 2010 6:13 pm

I'm unsure of where to put this, so I chose the Q+A area as I am asking a question of sorts.

I've just got my hands on a Neo Geo Pocket Color and the system battery has run dry.
I accept that this is a side effect of being a 11 year old handheld. But rather than replacing the 3v button cell, I was considering an alternative fix to this, and would prefer some feedback rather than just going ahead with it and potentially damaging this beautiful little gaming device.

My idea is simple;
The memory runs off of a single 3v CR2032 Lithium "button" cell battery. It's non-rechargeable, and I don't know the lifespan of it when in the Neo Geo Pocket Color.
So rather than replacing it, I was considering taking a power feed from the consoles main battery compartment.
Theoretically this should work, as the main battery compartment holds 2 AA batteries in series, giving a 3v power supply.

I'm also considering fitting a 3v rechargeable battery pack with a charging circuit built in it. So I wouldn't have to replace the batteries every time they got low.
And combined with my memory battery jumper idea, the memory would never run out of power. That is my theory anyway.

So, my question is simple;
Will it be safe to connect the main battery terminals to those of the memory batter cell terminals?
Of course I won't be putting the original 3v memory cell in, as my idea negates the need for it.

Any ideas, improvements or feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
