I used to get hypnotised by the horizontal lines appearing one by one to form the title screen image on my Amstrad.

On other games, I'd just have a full on fist fight with my older brother to decide who got 1st go. . . usually him.

i remember a friend had a System 80 (terrible early censored Smith re-branded computer). It had a built in tape drive with a little balancing gauge on it, and you had to twiddle a censored as the game loaded to ensure it loaded successfully. For 20 minutes.

I remember an application called fastload (5k long?) that you load, then load one of the compressed tape games, which took a 20 min load down to 2 mins or so... a huge lifesaver, which stopped the disk drives from gaining as much currency as they should have, in australia.
