Top 100 games lists

Postby Ringoko on Wed Oct 06, 2010 4:37 am

I would like to see some good, reliable lists of the top 100 (or more) games for each system, like the amstrad cpc, zx spectrum and c64. I think a good list is always the most exciting, eyecatching, dramatic part of a magazine - imagine how many copies you'd shift with TOP 100 SNES GAMES splashed over the cover (and subsequent months of emails flaming the decisions).

Music and movie magazines constantly have these massive lists, but in my experience with retro gamer - admittedly I've been buying it regularly only in the past year - the most I really see is top 10s.

It's hard for me to even formulate a top 10 list let alone a top 100. Maybe try searching the forums as this has been done countless times before.

unfortunately, 'top' and '100' are both too short a term to search for. people have made many threads around the theme of 'post your top games' but so far i've never seen anything comprehensive.

for example, i think with say, 25 games for a system, you're leaving out so many classics. 100 is a good round number i think. the lemon forums have compiled excellent lists for the c64 and amiga, here and here

also... rather than relying on the odd vote of a crazy man in his bedroom polishing his gun and voting for emlyn hughes international soccer, we'd get the reliability of the RG team behind these lists.

i think the mere fact that they've been done countless of times proves that its a hot topic just waiting to be addressed.

I think the mere fact that they've been done countless times proves it doesn't need to be done again.

Now, Stuart Campbell doing a "Top 100 games you've never played but should check out" feature, I'd read...

The only way to make a top 100 anywhere near valid is to get 50 people to list their top 10/20 and compile it from that. Any more than 20 (and even that is probably too many) from a single person and list becomes a pretty invalid memory test rather than any true statement of worth.

i dont mean to sound offensive because i appreciate that the same newbie threads over and over again are annoying as hell, but i think you missed my point.

these threads appear constantly because, people are always looking for a good batch of games to get their hands on if they're looking to get into a new platform. they're never satisfied authoritavely. if there was one good list, people could link to it and, end-of-discussion.

the greatest magazine ever (in my opinion), Your Sinclair, ended its run with an excellent, tear-inducing, definitive top 100. its like closing the book and saying "this is the best the spectrum could do. this is why we fell in love with it."

i think because retro gamer deals exclusively with old computers & consoles, its in a unique position to create lists like this across every platform.

that would probably be the ideal, but then theres a lot to be said about getting a small group of experts (like ex magazine reviewers) round a table to formulate a good list. for example, there's just one guy at retro sanctuary but he's come up with some really good informative lists, and obviously knows his stuff. but then in a group vote his voice would have the same weight as ZeldaSux3000 who had 8 games.

anyway I've tried to sell this enough, if nobody really thinks its worth it then so be it :)

And while I'm not knocking a newbie, I would point out

- as you say that YS list was in the last ever issue, so perhaps a milestone issue (RG does have issue 100 looming ever closer) you could get away with it, but
- very often this sort of list is used as a filler piece/end of year special, and I'd rather read something else
- the regular features on hardware give lists and suggested games, there are regular features on what to play (and what not to play in the form of Retro Shamer)

So on balance I say that RG doesn't need to do this sort of feature at present. Like I say, I'd rather read about 100 games I haven't played.

I did this for the Atari ST a couple of years ago: http://thejoyofsticks.wordpress.com/the ... rvey-2008/

Probably not exactly what you are after, Ringoko, but it's a start.

Yeah I remember that. It was really good. It would be fun for other people to do the same for other systems.

i've seen that before! its a great list, and i used it to snap up some ST games i'd never played, like captain blood.

i always thought it'd be a good idea to stick one of those '100 games in 10 minutes" videos up on youtube (the snes one got 2 million hits, amiga 1 million) and ask viewers to post their top ten games for that system. that way it'd get plenty more votes than if it were asked on a specialist forum, and it would basically never die.

i'd be struggling when i got to the 100 sam coupé games in 10 minutes though :|

I do wish spammers would attend some online class in 'how to spam well !'. I know companies often pay these idiots peanuts to join forums and post this crap but they could at least put something decent ! Can spot them a mile off with a username of 'KENNETH' !

That's the best idea ever, we should all keep cold-calling him until he does it.
