Gizmondo RIP

Postby Mad Gerald on Mon Jan 23, 2006 4:40 pm

from Engadget:

What, you have zero reason to act surprised that Tiger Telematics, creator of the Gizmondo and Smart Adds, is filing for bankruptcy in the UK, their country of origin. We've been following these guys since day one and we're pretty sure there wasn't anyone who didn't see their collapse as absolutely eventual; the filing -- submitted last Friday -- surfaced today in apparent explanation to the SEC of what happens to their US operations. It looks like they'll be seeking Chapter-11-like financial protection for now as they restructure their UK operations, and they're expected to cut 50% of their monthly staffing expenditures (which we're, knowing these guys, will start from the bottom up) -- but it'll be biz as usual elsewhere. So, what's Tiger's next step with one foot planted firmly in the grave?

from me:

Shame to see any console fail. But this failed spectacularly well - Didn't anyone think to tell the bosses that Gizmondo as a name sucks BIG TIME!

Anyone know where I can pick up a cheap Gizmondo?

Yeah, you had to rest the Lynx case down because it was so heavy...

No that sensible on Atari's part, the Lynx was called thus because we all prefer names to numbers; that's why people call the Spectrum 48K the Speccy, the C64 the Commie, the Amiga 500 the Miggy or the BBC Model B the Beeb. Similarly, the Lynx name was part of a series, the other two being the Panther and the Jaguar - all powerful beasts so the insinuation is that the Atari kit was powerful too and that's pretty much the case even if that power wasn't always used.

Gizmondo as a name, on the other hand, was wank and no two ways about it. =-)

Sorry, I'd gone off on a tangent - I was using the Lynx as an example of a failed console not as a bad name.

A good bad name would be TI994A.

I wonder if we'll get the likes of Sticky Balls now getting a PSP/DS release, or will that go down with the ship ?

Everyone forgets the Falcon.
The average game player is 33 years old.
The average age of the most frequent game buyer is 38 years old. 92 percent of computer game buyers and 80 percent of console game buyers are over the age of 18

Was sticking to the consoles, the Falcon's name didn't fit in with the "name it after a large cat" strategy. =-)

i wouldn't have said it failed, it wasn't massively successful but it didn't bankrupt the company and lasted a few years on the market - that's better than the Gizmondo has managed, possibly even the N-Gage...

The lynx had compelling reasons to buy, the fact it was the most powerful handheld for instance.

The Giz had little to zero.
