No that sensible on Atari's part, the Lynx was called thus because we all prefer names to numbers; that's why people call the Spectrum 48K the Speccy, the C64 the Commie, the Amiga 500 the Miggy or the BBC Model B the Beeb. Similarly, the Lynx name
was part of a series, the other two being the Panther and the Jaguar - all powerful beasts so the insinuation is that the Atari kit was powerful too and that's pretty much the case even if that power wasn't always used.
Gizmondo as a name, on the other hand, was wank and no two ways about it. =-)
