Sega's Tempo

Postby NonShinyGoose on Sun Oct 24, 2010 7:52 pm

How about a feature on Tempo, Sega's often forgotten videogame character?

Only one of the three Tempo games was released in the UK (Tempo Jr. on GameGear) but they were all pretty good. It's interesting how Sega changed the boxart for the US releases too:

Recal seeing this in Ultimate Future Games magazine at the time. Tempo is a Grasshopper is`nt he?. Never even knew of G.G games, thought it was 32X only title. So yeah, maybe little feature at some point in future is called for.

There's a Japanese Saturn game too. Not sure if it's a port or a sequel though.

Sounds like a fun game! (no pun intended) I hope to have this for my 32x someday, but a lot of people said it's a seizure-inducing game because of all the patterns and things happening in the background. Hope I don't die playing it
I made a video that includes some of (or most) of the Sega 32x games, please check it out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnMRJ0qub3E

Why do the Americans ALWAYS screw with fantastic Japanese boxart?

I recently learned of the Tempo series and I can say this in hindsight; for its time, Tempo has some of the smoothest and most detailed frames of animation around and given it's on such a powerful platform (32X) it is an expected result. As mentioned there is the Saturn game Super Tempo which is indeed a sequel to Tempo, but is exclusive to Japan.

I would think this would make for a good candidate for a Import Only section (the Saturn game) or just an article on the 32X game in general. Not only is the animation superb but the platforming and level design is quite interesting and fun. As the name suggests, the game is heavily inspired and plays out in relation to music. Not only but the character was developed as suggested on the title screen by Red, the group behind games such as Gate of Thunder and Lords/Winds of Thunder on the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx16.

The 32X and Game Gear games are great, didn't know there was a Saturn one around too.

I like that weird "rap" thing at the start of the 32X game - which also happens to be a very difficult platformer, I might add.
