I voted DKC, because the modern one - although nice looking - looks to be a bit of a retread of old ground. The original looked pretty groundbreaking in its day, and still looks impressive now, so it wins my vote.

I've just got the new one and I cannot tell people enough how much I love it. It's unbelievable and my favourite game on the Wii by a mile. Can not put it down and I'm starting to think that it's the best 2 player co-op platform game ever made (blows New Mario Bros Wii away and for one good reason (amongst hundreds of others) - I have yet to shout at my girlfriend for screwing up!). Everything that happens feels fresh and innovative; every new stage surprises me. This never once happened in the original. And I thought I'd seen it all. I knew it was gonna be good just not this good! The new moves DK and Diddy have makes a massive difference to the gameplay; the name is almost misleading. It's not a retread at all but I feel that one has to experience it to realise this.

I will be massively upset when I've completed it as there is nothing else like this out there. Best early Xmas pressie ever and an easy 100% from me!

I liked the original but I always thought Mario World was a better game when the hype that preceded it made one think the moon on a stick was coming. It's came alright, just 17 years later.

Can't vote here I am afraid. Both games are totally amazing.

DKC gave me amazing visuals and sound it 1994 coupled with brilliant levels and a lot of variety with the locations. The opening level alone sold me on the game and the underwater levels were just beautiful. The music is flawless to this day it still amazes me.
DKC Returns gives you amazing visuals in a different way, not in the forefront of technology but at the forefront of charm and design. Levels are excellent, loads going on with the right level of challenge. The music is also superbly done, giving proper remakes of the old tunes and a few new ones too. The lack of underwater levels and pointless shaking are the only problems for me.

from the bits I've played of each - Returns seems to take the original and just make it that bit better. No wow factors graphically like the original - but a better play in general.

The original was brilliant, and I haven't played the new one yet so I guess DKC gets my vote.

I voted DKCR. Its a great and improved homage to classic 90's 2D platforming, and has fresh and surprising levels and fun challenges.

DKC Returns gets my vote. In my opinion it plays better, its more fun and I much prefer the level design in Returns to the original DKC.

DKC Returns for me, especially as my hacked Wii allows me to use the Classic Controller without the need for stupidly tacked on motion controls.

I never really got on with the original games but after I finish Returns I'm looking to go back to the original and it's sequels.

Retro Studios did a great job in capturing the feel of the original game, but you just cannot beat the original. The game was enormous, gorgeous in every way, and really captured something new and fresh. Rare did a great job reinvigorating Donkey Kong.

i also think Miyamoto's feeling at the time of the original DKR were quite perceptive - that it was a case of looks over gameplay - which means the originals havent aged too well. That Miyamoto bloke may just know a little bit about game design....

It's a simple question. The original will always be the best because without it, you wouldn't have DKC Returns. And it simply was the best game.

Whilst the new DKCR is a brilliant game and a fantastic homage to the original series, DKC came first and blew us all away.. Plus there are more animals, the excellent water levels, and the ability to switch between the 2 apes.

It was a close one but the original gets the vote
