My review deleted...Why?

Postby Megamixer on Sat Nov 28, 2009 6:47 pm

Uploaded a profile for the 3DO version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo a few days back and even got one comment on it. BUT it's now gone, deleted, dead.

My question...why? I'm assuming someone didn't notice that it was the previously UNWRITTEN ABOUT 3DO conversion and just though "Hmm...seen that one before...DELETE".

Perhaps an extreme reaction but it just annoys me that some of the bad/blatant copies haven't been deleted and something I genuinely put time into and was 100% within the guidelines has been erased. Really angry and hating the site at the moment.

Yeah, I noticed that - but it seems par for the course over there at the moment - Like you say, there are many duplicates on there that haven't been removed, and yet your review (that wasn't a duplicate) has been singled out - strange.

I hope that you saved a copy of your review, resubmit it maybe?

Yep, saved the text in Word. Somebody's (can't remember who now) Time Crisis review vanished once but it returned mysteriously soon after so...don't know.

I'll resubmit it again but if it gets wiped a second time then I might just give up with the site - if whoever's in charge can't be bothered to check the formats first then I'm not going to waste any more time uploading reviews - I've been doing them for a long, long time now too.

Did you upload a screenshot or box art, because screenshots are generally the only ones accepted?

Was that why? It was boxart. I would have put a screenie in but it was hard to tell (by looking at Google images) which was the 3DO version and which wasn't when I was getting so many results coming up. There are loads of profiles on there with boxart though so I assumed it would be fine...

Where's my Commodore 16 review of Uwol: Quest For Money?, you bastards :x

Seriously. I don't understand it. There is no duplicate review. Is it because it's a newly released game? I would still class it down as retro. It's a shame I didn't keep a backup of the review :(

The site doesn't seem to be run by anyone with any care or love to be honest - I think it's just someone' s job to upload the reviews late last thing on a Friday night before they leave the building.

I'm guessing that someone glanced at the date of release and hit the delete button without giving a second thought to the context of the review. Someone on the staff has already admitted that the reviews aren't read through by the staff at all - which also begs the question as to how the reviews are chosen for publication in the magazine, no to mention the game of the week section (which now seems to be game of the month  )

As I said, not much love being shown at all on that site at the moment.

There was talk of making one of the users a moderator of sorts, to make things run a bit more smoothly, but that seems to have been forgotten about - much like the whole site it seems...

**EDIT** - AND the link from the forums to the main page seems to be broken at the moment.

Hear hear, I just created my new account on the main RG site this morning and I see this has happened to me as well. Granted, the game in question for my first review is from a classic series with ports of the various games on pretty much every retro system around, but I certainly took the time to check there were no duplicates for the very different Megadrive version I've written about. Correct type of screenshot (not boxart or title screen), not above or below the word-count range, everything filled out accurately as far as I can remember...can't imagine why on earth it's been rejected other than the quite likely scenario someone's posted above. Anyway, certainly nothing to be p*ssed off about or lose sleep over, I simply now know not to bother putting any time into writing another one.

Poor Retro Gamer website... it still seems a little bit unloved to me.
I remember a day when it was cherished and looked after, when game of the week was changed weekly, when new reviews appeared a few at a time - rather than twenty at once, and when duplicate reviews got dealt with. Now most users seem to have abandoned it, with new reviews getting very few comments or views, and many of the excellent contributors of the past being long gone.

To be fair there has been a few good reviews on the site lately, but something still needs to be done, it really is a fantastic resource, and should be looked after properly. In just over 100 reviews there will be 3000 games on there - pretty impressive by anyones standards.

Come on Darran and co. you started the site, and used to love it, if you no longer care about it then hand it over to someone who does... whoever that may be.

Agree with everything there, ipmarks, something should be done - at least the link from the forum has finally been fixed...

I don't understand why more of the regular Forumites don't seem to visit the site and post comments - it's almost as if they don't realise it's there.

The whole thing needs a facelift - make the comments section more accessible for a start, with an option to be able to see new comments posted for starters. I seem to remember there was some talk of changes some time ago, but as you say, the whole site seems to have been forgotten about.

I would certainly make an effort to post some new reviews if the place didn't seem to be frozen in time, but as it is now, I cant be enthused into action.

TBH, I totally forgot it is there. Perhaps we need a thread so people can post up links to their latest reviews.

Nice idea, but I for one would be far too bashful to shout out about one of my reviews. Maybe a more prominent link to the site on the forum would be a help for starters.

I guess if it was a YouTube review it would be a different matter

I've only stopped posting reviews because I've almost ran out of games that haven't already been covered. I tend to do full reviews for my blog now though. If there's a real interest in giving the site a boot up the backside though, I might have a look at some of my more retro reviews and do some cut down versions for the site.

I just opted to use that warning because it was vaguely related to sex. There's nothing offensive there but I must have thought it warranted that when I wrote it. It's a family site after all

Cheers for reading anyway :)
