Quackshot Article? (Reposted in the right place)

Postby Sepp Salerno on Thu Feb 10, 2011 9:41 pm

I've been a subscriber to RG for the best part of 2 years, but I can never remember there being any big spreads on Quackshot. I've not been a reader since the start, so if there has been, then I'm proper sorry I missed it as I've got to say that not only is Quackshot my favourite megadrive title (by a landslide) but it's in my top 5 games of all time.

I've got it on pause as I post this as every single time I've fired it up over the past 18 years I still get a huge kick out of playing it which never ever goes away.

I'm still playing it at least once every other month after all this time, and no matter what way I look at it, it both graphically and sonically it destroys a lot of it's contemporaries (and I include the 'illusion games in that - which are themselves masterpieces) and it STILL looks amazing. It also seems to refuse to date.

It's pacing is spot on, it levels up nicely, the controls are great as are the powerups, and weapon changes. It's a platformer, it's got tidy little puzzles, and I remember when I first played it (back when it first came out) I thought it was amazing how you could choose where you started on the map, call the plane and get taken somewhere to find another relic, or missing artefact.

If it's not been done I would love to read a 'making of' and find out why this game was thought up in the first place, because as far as I can tell it's not based on any cartoon, or have it feature as a 'let's all play' or just for it to occupy a few pages one issue.

Or am I the only person who thinks this is probably the most underrated 16bit game ever.

GamesTM have done a big feature on it (part of their "Best Retro Game Ever" series) - it's in the first Retro bookazine, or GamesTM Issue 16... Happy hunting!

I misread the topic title and thought you meant Quickshot, as in the joystick manufacturers...

I second this - I thoroughly enjoyed Quackshot back when it came out - shame my cousin bloody sold it when she borrowed it off me as she sold her entire collection the dink!

Although, I still think that Castle of Illusion on the Mega Drive is the Disney game on the System. Quackshot for me still gets a place in my top 10 Mega Drive Games. I would love a full spread of this game. As long as they have a tip's section as it is not a very forgiving game to play.
