As an update to the post above -

On further research, MM96 works on EEPROM, which will be controlled by one of those smaller chips. I may be able to fix it, but it'll take some serious chip surgery.

Will keep posting as I progress, but would still be glad for any suggestions or info in the meantime... :)

I take it that there is nothing on the other side of the PCB either. OK looking a the picture there is a rather obvious capacitor near the bottom of the of the pcb. This could have been used to keep power to the relevant pin on the IC Chip for the stored memory. Just a guess. But if so it might need to be re-charged ie: playing the game for a set period of time or it might need changed for a new one. I don't have this particular game in my Mega Drive collection or I would have a look myself. Cheep capacitor's and SEGA do go hand in hand though.
