Megadrive 2 HDTV?

Postby Role on Wed Sep 07, 2011 12:13 pm

Apologies if this has already been answered somewhere else.

I have a PAL Megadrive 2 console. Recently I migrated to an LG 32LD450 from a standard CRT TV, as i still can't shift the retro sega bug I've been keen to get it up and running.

Basically i manually tuned the HD TV via the Arial port using the Megadrive RF unit, however i can't get clear picture quality - the image keeps flickering and the colours are way off.

As i thought it could just be the adapter i invested in a composite AV cable in an attempt to solve the problem, alas the problem is still there.

I've even went as far as feeding the Megadrive AV composite to a DVD player and using the SCART from the DVD player to the HD TV, but still no luck :(

So basically my question is does anyone know of any possible solutions to this problem or any further equipment i could buy to enable me to get my Megadrive up and running on an HD TV

Thanks in advance, any help is greatly appreciated :)

Pick up an old TV from a car boot sale (one of those small ones like you probably used to have in your bedroom) and plug it in to that instead. That's what I've done. I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but I found it works best.

Besides, if you want the retro feel it's the only real way to get it :D

That will be the last resort if no one has a definitive solution.

Out of sheer convinience though, getting the HD TV to play ball would save me a trip or two + think summer is on its way out now :(.

The good ol' ATgames Megadrive runs quite well through my Toshiba, as does my Dingoo A320 with Dingux installed, so there's a couple of alternatives for you.

Thanks for the advice themightymartin.

I've been doing a bit of digging around, the only other possible solutions I could find are as follows (just in case anyone else is interested):

(I'm assuming:)
Sega Megadrive 2 > Scart Cable > SCART to HDMI Converter / Upscale > HDMI Cable > (HDTV) - There has been some lag issues and general artifacting with this method in some instances.

Sega Megadrive 2 > RGB AV SCART Cable with RCA sound leads out (RCA sound leads directly into HDTV) > SCART RGB to Y-U-V Component Converter > RCA Cables > (HDTV)

NOTE: Component converters dont transcode sound so you would need a RGB AV SCART Cable with RCA out leads to connect directly to the HDTV, like such: http://retrogamingcables.co.uk/sega-meg ... -rca-sound

Alternatively if your made of money you could use: http://junkerhq.net/xrgb/index.php/XRGB-3 with an XRGB compatible scart cable from the megadrive.

General RGB to Component VS HDMI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DykaSZ7nLa8

I would be keen to know if anyone has tried either of these setups and had any success? I sure could do with some dutch courage before i decide to make a jump. :)

Yeah, both an RGB in(PC) and a Scart (RGB)TV.

I've tried the Scart (RGB) with the RGB plugged into an RGB / Scart adapter but like i say because the TV is transizing etc the Megadrive signal (320px) I end up with a screwy picture.

I've just recently bought JS Tech RGB to Component YUV converter (http://www.js-technology.com/product_in ... ucts_id=36), RGB YUV /3 Phono to 3 Phono & 2 x RCA/Phono Plugs to 2 X RCA/Phono Plugs .

I'm hoping to get it all rigged up next week. Fingers crossed it will work or i will have to resort to a CSY... I will keep everyone updated.

This could be a lifesaver for you guys. I had flickering on my Saturn, Snes, CDI etc through my HDTV. apparently its the type of Scart signal and how the TV interprets it. I bought this.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vivanco-Av-Co ... 4ab32d04a2

It has an RGB switch on off switch and, To be honest I dont know what it did, but now all my old consoles work great on my HDTV.

heres another one the same, the maker is Vivanco.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AV-Control-Bo ... 2c6278e488

It seems the important thing is that little RGB on/off switch. I hooked up my Amstrad gx4000 and the colours were off and it was flickering like hell, I pressed the switch and everything was perfect. It workrd for me so it may be worth a try.
