Possibly not my favourite game of all time, but I remember a short adventure called Merry Christmas from Melbourne House which was very pretty. Can't remember which mag, think possibly C+VG

A bit of a laugh, and originally free on the cover of The One.
It became a cracking tournament game, which was tons of fun, especially when Team 17 generously donated a nifty little prize for the biggest "Waggler" (mainvein).
Also useful as an alternative to flipping a coin in the Sensi Tournament between the 3 finalists.

Is that game like Combat School? Where you have to waggle the joystick back and forth as fast as possible?

Yes pretty much, but it's not just about speed you need a solid rhythm too. As mainvein will tell you. :)

Also, there is absolutely no point to the game whatsoever, apart from amassing a high score. It has a pretty jaunty soundtrack though.

Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles arcade game on the cover of Amstrad Action. It was only the first level demo but playing an arcade game on your home micro for free was quite special in 1991.

Yes, it was C&VG and it looked fantastic - quite short - but a brilliant Christmas give away that put me in the mood for the festive season . . .Really enjoyed it and one of my favourite cover mounts . . something different and original.

I'll just ask this here. I'm thinking of ordering a few issues of Retro Gamer Magazine for my mate as a christmas present. Is it possible to order the magazine only for like 3 months or so?

(which may have been one of the first tapes on the cover I believe?)

It was the first cover tape Zzap!64 did. Also featured a concept demo by Sensible Software for a game that never came out, and also the remix of the Sanxion music by Rob Hubbard as audio on the reverse...

Funnily enough, it's not a remix. It's the original piece. Iirc Rob made it for a song competition for one of the synthesiser magazines :)

Amazingly that Zzzap cover tape lead to him being contacted by Stock Aitken and Waterman about doing music for them

Hmmm... true... I meant it in the sense that it was a full-on "proper" piece of music done with professional synthesisers instead of being the actual SID music.
