Voted for the original...
Nothing can ever match the sheer wonder of seeing that game run for the first time. It's also wonderfully written and plotted. Newer Mario games are good, but something has got lost along the way I feel.

News!

Super Mario 64 is far too overrated. I'm sure the copy I've played is missing the gameplay or something.

That said, I haven't played Super Mario 3D Land, so I'm not voting.

Super Mario 64 kept me playing for weeks and I enjoyed absolutely every minute. But, I feel tired of the Mario franchise and have no interest in Super Mario 3D Land at all :(

I'm not voting either.

Commence verbal beating now, but I never really liked the 3D incarnations of the Mario games. The classic 2D Mario games are above and beyond the 3D Mario games, imho.

Super Mario 64 was such a leap forward from Super Mario World that no Mario game I have played since has topped it.

Although I didn't play it on launch, when I finally did I realised what everyone was talking about at work. Just so much fun. I'm now currently playing 3D Land & it's making me smile & wince at the same time. So my vote goes to Super Mario 64.

Maybe you can explain (shortly) why it was such a leap forward for you. Because for me, the step into 3D was actually a step backward, especially control-wise.
And please don't get me wrong: SM64 is a good game. 8)

I've played a quick go on the new Mario, maybe it takes a day or more of playing to really get into it, but its just missing something for me compared to SM64, on first impressions I'd go with the former, but i think more playing is needed....

Super Mario 3D Land is over in no time at all from what I've heard so I'd go for Super Mario 64.

Took me 20 hours to completely complete 3D Land (i.e. complete all the levels) which was the same time it took for me to get all 150 Stars on the DS version of Super Mario 64 so I'd say game length is about the same, only difference is 3D Land has loads of shorter levels compared to 64's smaller number of larger levels.

I just thought it was fascinating at the time because I never thought games would be anything more than 2D. When I was a kid, my expectation of what video games would evolve into was NSMB Wii, not Super Mario Galaxy.

Having said that, with some age and wisdom under my belt, I can say that if I were to compare Super Mario World and Super Mario 64, I would pick Super Mario World because it has that special 16-bit sprite goodness that I fell in love with 20 years ago and still love to this day. Super Mario 64 is still a close second though and like I said in my first post, no Mario game since then has topped it. Although it's visuals are not as timelessly classic as the 16-bit spritework, the game is still a very fun experience and it blew me away the first time I played it.

While I do really enjoy Mario 64, I think it is vastly overrated.
